Role Description

We're looking for a Python Backend Engineer who ships fast, thinks clearly, and writes code that holds up in production. You'll build backend systems for AI-powered products at an early-stage startup, working directly with founders in a high-output team where your work has immediate, visible impact.

You'll use AI coding tools daily. We expect that. But we also expect you to know why the code works, catch when it doesn't, and fix what the AI gets wrong. The bar is strong fundamentals, not just prompt engineering.

This role demands high agency, you identify problems, propose solutions, and drive them to completion without waiting to be told what to do. Strong communication skills are a must; you'll be articulating technical decisions, writing clear documentation, and collaborating closely with stakeholders across the team.

What You'll Do

- Build and maintain backend services in Python (FastAPI, Flask, or similar)

- Design APIs, data models, and service architectures for AI-driven products

- Integrate with LLM APIs, vector databases, and third-party services

- Own features end-to-end: scoping, building, testing, deploying, monitoring

- Move fast with best practices; clean commits, clear PRs, minimal tech debt

What We're Looking For

Must have:

- 1-3 years of hands-on Python backend development

- Strong fundamentals in data structures, algorithms, and system design - you can whiteboard a solution

- Experience building REST APIs and working with relational databases (PostgreSQL preferred)

- Comfortable with Git, CI/CD pipelines

- Actively uses AI coding tools (Cursor, Copilot, Claude Code, etc.) and understands their limits, you review AI-generated code critically, not blindly

- Can read a traceback, reason about a bug, and fix it

Good to have:

- Experience with FastAPI, async Python, or event-driven architectures

- Familiarity with Docker, Cloud Run, or serverless deployments

- Exposure to LLM APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google) and building AI-powered features

- Background in task queues (Celery, Redis) and background job processing

- Experience working in early-stage or fast-moving teams where priorities shift weekly

- Familiarity with cloud infrastructure
