We're hiring a Backend Engineer to own and build the backend of a subscription-based SaaS platform. The product includes gated content, video courses, AI-powered features, research tools, and real-time systems, built on Python/FastAPI with PostgreSQL on AWS. This is a hands-on, building role. You'll work across content APIs, payment integrations, user management, backend infrastructure, and AI system integrations.
You'll communicate directly with project managers and occasionally with technical stakeholders.
We need someone who can read an existing codebase, take ownership, improve systems proactively, and drive decisions independently. Not someone who waits to be told what to do next.
What You'll Work On
- Backend services and APIs built with Python and FastAPI
- Content management systems: gated libraries, video courses, and admin tooling
- User migration and onboarding pipelines
- AI system integrations: LLM APIs, context management, usage controls, and knowledge retrieval
- Real-time features using WebSocket-based messaging and community systems
- Database design, migrations, and query optimization in PostgreSQL
- AWS infrastructure: EC2, RDS, SES, Docker, and deployment workflows
- Backend reliability and production monitoring using Sentry, logging systems, and analytics tooling
- Backend scalability, performance optimization, and API hardening
Requirements
- 4+ years of professional backend engineering experience in Python
- Strong FastAPI skills including async patterns and dependency injection
- Solid PostgreSQL knowledge: schema design, migrations, query optimization, and indexing
- Experience with Stripe or similar payment and subscription APIs
- Experience with AWS, Docker, and backend deployment workflows
- Comfortable working with existing production systems and improving them incrementally
- Comfortable writing migration scripts that safely handle production data
- Familiarity with observability and debugging tools: Sentry, logging systems, analytics platforms
- Understanding of backend security best practices, authentication flows, and API hardening
- Strong English communication. You will work directly with international clients
- Comfortable taking ownership of an existing codebase and improving it without hand-holding
Preferred
- Experience integrating LLM and AI APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic, or similar)
- WebSocket or real-time messaging experience
- Experience with fintech, SaaS, or content platforms
- Exposure to subscription or membership-based products
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and deployment automation
- Worked with international teams across time zones
