Job Title: Project Lead
Job Description
The Project Lead supports the planning, coordination, and execution of commissioning activities for building mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems. This role assists with engineering evaluations, documentation development, site verification, and functional testing to ensure systems meet design intent, code requirements, and industry standards. The Project Lead works closely with clients, contractors, and project teams on multiple concurrent projects while continuously developing technical expertise in commissioning and facility management systems.
Responsibilities
- Perform basic engineering calculations to support the evaluation and design of building systems.
- Assist in evaluating fundamental engineering guidelines, code compliance requirements, and relevant industry standards.
- Contribute to the development of commissioning documentation, including commissioning plans, specifications, reports, manuals, checklists, tests, and review and issue logs.
- Support the design and submittal review process by reviewing drawings, specifications, and submittals for compliance with project requirements.
- Attend site visits to verify system and equipment installation and prepare detailed field reports documenting site observations and functional testing results.
- Assist with analyzing test results and compare them to acceptance criteria defined in test procedures.
- Support troubleshooting, analysis, and research of equipment and system issues to determine root causes.
- Assist in developing and recommending solutions and corrective actions for commissioning issues identified during site visits and functional testing.
- Participate in multiple projects concurrently, managing tasks and priorities to meet project schedules and deliverables.
- Contribute to the commissioning of facility management systems, including barcoding, preventive maintenance work order systems, organizational structures, and computerized maintenance management software.
- Perform general project support tasks such as photocopying, plotting, scanning, packaging, mailing, and other administrative or logistical duties required to support project completion and the smooth operation of the firm.
- Update job knowledge and technical expertise by participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, and engaging with technical organizations.
- Travel interstate up to approximately 50% of the time, as needed, to support project and commissioning activities.
- Maintain effective written and verbal communication with clients, contractors, and other project team members to ensure alignment and successful project delivery.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support project goals and organizational needs.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited engineering curriculum.
- 3 to 5+ years of experience in building MEP systems design, energy studies, and commissioning.
- Hands-on experience with mechanical systems and commissioning activities.
- Familiarity with building mechanical, electrical, and life safety systems operations.
- Knowledge of electrical systems preferred but not required.
- Ability to obtain Security and CORI clearance from commercial, private, and government agencies.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to analyze technical issues and propose solutions.
- Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and related tools.
- Ability to read and interpret drawings and technical documentation.
- Willingness and ability to travel interstate up to approximately 50% of the time.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with AWS in the context of engineering, commissioning, or data management environments.
- LEED Accredited Professional credential is a plus.
- Introductory working knowledge of BIM Revit and AutoCAD is beneficial.
- Experience participating in technical organizations and staying current with professional publications.
- Exposure to facility management systems such as barcoding, preventive maintenance work order systems, and computerized maintenance management software.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks and projects concurrently.
- Attention to detail in documentation, reporting, and compliance with standards and procedures.
Work Environment
The Project Lead works in a mixed office and field environment, balancing desk-based engineering and documentation tasks with frequent site visits to active facilities. Office work involves using standard business software such as the Microsoft Office Suite, as well as design and modeling tools like BIM Revit and AutoCAD where applicable. Field work includes visiting construction and operational sites to verify installations, observe system performance, and support functional testing. The role requires up to approximately 50% interstate travel, which may involve working in different facility types and adapting to varying site conditions. The position supports the commissioning of building MEP systems and facility management tools, including barcoding, preventive maintenance work order systems, and computerized maintenance management software. Work hours generally align with standard business schedules, with flexibility needed to accommodate site activities, testing windows, and project deadlines.
