About the School of Environment and Sustainability (SES)

The School of Environment and Sustainability (SES) at IIHS and its Long-term Urban Ecological Observatory (LTUEO), the first such mega-city observatory in the world, focus on the sustainable transformation of diverse human settlements and the social-ecological-technical systems they are part of in the face of global change, especially urbanisation and climate change. The SES and LTUEO work on cutting edge scholarship and knowledge, education, and practice focused on solutions to wicked and complex environment and sustainability problems within the context of a rapidly urbanising India.

Job Description

This position will be under a project for the restoration and conservation of freshwater habitats in urban/ peri-urban areas of Bengaluru, and will involve several aspects, including hydrological modelling, field monitoring, laboratory analysis, GIS-RS analyses, designing and conducting field experiments and capacity-building workshops for stakeholders. The incumbent will be part of the SES team working with peri-urban lakes and constructed wetlands in Bengaluru.

This will be a contractual position for an initial term of 11 months, renewable on mutual consent.

Activities and Tasks

Responsibilities would include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Conducting hydrological modelling studies using state-of-the-art physics-based models;
  • Developing local hydrological models based on field observations and parameters;
  • Conducting field hydrological studies within the IIHS campus and at other project sites;
  • Assisting in GIS analysis;
  • Contributing to other projects on environmental monitoring within the IIHS Kengeri campus and elsewhere;
  • Providing support to other IIHS activities including academics, research, training, practice, operations and others;
  • Participating in all activities of Institution-Building at IIHS; carrying out tasks as assigned by IIHS; and traveling on IIHS work within or outside the country as and when needed.

Structure and Reporting

The project associate will be an External Consultant coordinating with the Consultant – Research at IIHS and will be required to collaborate effectively with a diverse group of internal teams and external individuals/ organisations, and students.

Person Specification

The ideal candidate should have:

  • Tech. in Civil/ Environmental Engineering with an aptitude for hydrological modelling;
  • Tech. in Water Resources/ Hydrology/ Environmental Engineering or similar fields with relevant field experience in a thesis/ project;
  • At least one year of relevant work experience including experience handling satellite-based/ spatial data;
  • Experience in field hydrological methods and working with hydrological field instrumentation along with automated data collection systems;
  • A basic understanding of experimental study design and data analysis methods;
  • Proficiency in one programming language and MS Office ;
  • Strong organisational, communication and planning skills; effective team-work skills.

This is a contractual engagement for an initial term of 11 months, renewable on mutual consent. This offer is on an exclusive basis, which implies that other professional assignments (whether compensated or not) that bear a potential conflict of interest with IIHS cannot be undertaken.

The search will remain open until the position is filled.

Location

This position is based at the IIHS Kengeri Campus, Bengaluru and may entail travel to other locations in India.
