Job Description

About Hygenco

Hygenco develops, owns, and operates green hydrogen production facilities for captive and industrial customers across India. Our plants produce hydrogen through electrolysis and supply it to industrial consumers as a clean fuel or feedstock. Engineering is done in-house at the FEED level; external agencies execute detailed engineering against a frozen Hygenco-defined package.

Role Summary

Process & Safety Engineering Specialist is the technical authority for process engineering and process safety across Hygenco's green hydrogen plant portfolio. This is a senior role with organisation-wide engineering responsibility.

The person in this role sets and owns Hygenco's process engineering standards, operating and control philosophy, and process safety framework. They are the design authority the person whose sign-off governs process and safety decisions across all projects. They also develop and maintain the integrated plant model and simulation capability that underpins design validation and control philosophy development.

KeyResponsibilities

Process Design Authority

  • Serve as the design authority for all process engineering decisions across the project portfolio governing design basis, process philosophy, equipment selection criteria, material selection, and operating envelope definition.
  • Establish and own Hygenco's process engineering standards the internal criteria and requirements that all projects must comply with, and against which external engineering deliverables are reviewed and approved.
  • Own the Operating Philosophy and Control Philosophy for all plants defining how the integrated plant behaves across all operating modes, how control is structured at the system and loop level, and what operators are and are not expected to do.
  • Review and approve FEED deliverables PFDs, P&IDs, equipment datasheet bases not as a checker but as the technical authority whose sign-off determines whether process decisions are correct and complete.
  • Ensure all Hygenco-specific standards safety criteria, material selection, equipment requirements, and inspection philosophy are embedded into FEED deliverables as frozen requirements before handover to the external detailed engineering agency.
  • Collaborate with the electrical and automation team to ensure that the control philosophy is correctly and completely translated into the instrumentation and automation design.

Integrated Plant Modelling and Simulation

  • Develop and maintain a steady state simulation model of the complete integrated plant
  • covering the full process from water treatment through electrolysis, compression, and storage across all design cases and operating modes.
  • Develop dynamic simulation models to validate control philosophy, assess transient behaviour, and confirm that the plant responds under all operating and upset conditions correctly before design is frozen.
  • Use simulation as a design tool not a post-design validation step. Models should drive decisions on control logic, equipment sizing margins, and operating envelope definition.
  • Develop performance models for the electrolyser stack capturing polarisation behaviour, thermal response, and degradation and integrate these into the plant-level model.
  • Use simulation outputs to validate mass and energy balances, check control loop tuning parameters, and confirm safety system response times.
  • Maintain models as living documents that reflect the as-designed and as-built plant available as a tool for operations, troubleshooting, and future project development.

Process Safety Design Authority

  • Serve as Hygenco's ProcessSafety Manager the accountable technical authority for all process safety design decisions across all projects.
  • Lead and facilitate HAZID and HAZOP studies; ensure all findings are resolved and closed before the FEED package is handed over to the external agency.
  • Lead SIL determination studies(LOPA or equivalent); own the Safety Requirements Specification for all safety-instrumented functions.
  • Lead or commission Quantitative Risk Assessments (QRA) where required by regulation or site-specific risk profile; interpret results and define consequence-based design responses.
  • Own the Hazardous Area Classification for all plant unit areas this is a process-driven deliverable and must reflect process philosophy directly.
  • Define the Fire and Gas detection philosophy and firefighting design basis.
  • Maintain awareness of applicable statutory and regulatory requirements (PESO, PNGRB, Factories Act, and relevant international standards) and ensure FEED deliverables are fully compliant.
  • Establish and maintain Hygenco's process safety standards and risk criteria as organisational documents, applicable across all projects and plant configurations.

Engineering Standards and Organisational Knowledge

  • Establish and maintain Hygenco's internal engineering standards for process design, process safety, material selection, and control philosophy written as reusable organisational documents, not project-specific deliverables.
  • Ensure that engineering decisions made on each project are captured, codified, and available to inform future projects building organisational knowledge rather than project-specific knowledge.
  • Collaborate closely with the electrical and automation engineering team to ensure control philosophy and simulation outputs are properly translated into the automation and instrumentation design.

Qualification and Experience

Education

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Chemical Engineering or Process Engineering. Candidates from Mechanical Engineering with a strong demonstrated process background will be considered.

Experience

  • 8 to 15 years of experience in process engineering, with a strong front-end engineering or FEED background. Mid-level candidates (810 years) with exceptional depth in the technical areas below will be considered alongside senior candidates (1215 years).
  • Demonstrated experience owning the process engineering deliverable set, independently
  • designing the basis, PFDs, P&IDs, and equipment datasheets not merely contributing to them under supervision.
  • Hands-on experience with steady-state and dynamic process simulation having used simulation as a design and validation tool, not merely as a reporting exercise.
  • Experience in process safety HAZOP facilitation or leadership, SIL/LOPA studies, and QRA is essential. Candidates who have served as a process safety engineer or process safety manager are strongly preferred.
  • Background in hydrogen production, electrolysis, gas compression, or industrial gas processing is a strong advantage. Candidates from refinery, petrochemical, or gas processing backgrounds with directly transferable process and safety experience will be considered.

Personal Attributes

  • Deep technical ownership comfortable being the accountable engineering authority, not a contributor seeking validation from others.
  • Systems thinking able to hold the full integrated plant in mind while working at the granularity of an individual control loop or simulation node.
  • Intellectual rigour builds independent understanding of process systems and does not rely solely on vendor data or precedent.
  • Clear writtencommunication able to produceengineering documents that are precise, unambiguous, and serve as an executable basis for others.

Collaborative but decisive works effectively with electrical, civil, and automation teams but can make and own technical decisions without requiring consensus.

What We Offer

  • A role with genuine technical authority you set the standards and own the engineering decisions, not just implement them.
  • Work on green hydrogen production a sector that is technically demanding and growing, with real engineering challenges that require independent judgment.
  • A small, senior in-house engineering team where your work has a direct and visible impact on the project portfolio.
  • Opportunity to build a specialist function over time as the portfolio scales.
  • Competitive compensation commensurate with seniority and the specialist nature of the role.
