Principal Engineer Building Technology Systems (BTS)

Job Description

The Principal Engineer – Building Technology Systems (BTS) will lead, design, review, guide, coordinate and assure the delivery of ICT, AV, security and ELV systems across commercial, hospitality, residential, mixed-use, healthcare and infrastructure projects. The role requires multidisciplinary design leadership, technical assurance, stakeholder coordination and compliance with project requirements, applicable standards and local authority regulations.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the BTS discipline from concept through detailed design, tender documentation and construction-stage support.
• Provide design leadership, technical review and assurance for ICT, AV, security and ELV systems.
• Manage integration of BTS systems with architectural, MEP, structural and specialist disciplines.
• Coordinate with clients, consultants, contractors, vendors and internal teams to support effective project delivery.
• Ensure BTS designs comply with project requirements, international standards, local authority regulations and company quality procedures.
  
  

Design & Engineering

• Lead and develop BTS design solutions for structured cabling, telecom rooms, data centres, Wi-Fi, IP telephony, AV, CCTV, access control, intercom, intrusion detection, visitor management, parking management, ANPR, DAS and smart building systems.
• Oversee concept, schematic, detailed design and tender-stage deliverables.
• Validate system sizing, capacity requirements, equipment space planning, containment routes, power, cooling and infrastructure requirements.
• Prepare and review key technical specifications, basis of design reports and design narratives.
  
  

Project Delivery

• Lead BTS project delivery and ensure submissions meet agreed technical quality, programme and project requirements.
• Plan work allocation and manage engineers and modellers to support timely delivery of project outputs.
• Lead technical coordination meetings, design workshops and interdisciplinary reviews.
• Review shop drawings, material submittals, method statements, RFIs and technical queries during construction support stages.
• Identify design risks, authority approval constraints and coordination issues, and propose practical mitigation measures.
  
  

Documentation & Quality

• Review and approve BTS reports, calculations, drawings, specifications and design narratives for technical quality and consistency.
• Maintain documentation in accordance with company quality procedures and project delivery requirements.
• Support value engineering, technical clarifications and authority submission requirements.
  
  

Software Tools

• Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks, Bluebeam, Microsoft Office and BIM coordination workflows. Familiarity with specialist ICT, AV, security and wireless design tools such as Ekahau, iBwave, JVSG or EASE is preferred.
  
  

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Electronics, Telecommunications, Building Services Engineering or a related discipline.
• 10–15 years experience in ICT, AV, security or ELV systems design consultancy.
• Proven experience leading multidisciplinary design teams on complex building or infrastructure projects.
• Middle East project design and authority approval experience is preferred.
• Professional certifications such as BICSI RCDD, AVIXA CTS or equivalent are preferred.

• Promotes knowledge sharing, innovation, continuous improvement and adherence to company standards and procedures.
• Technical Knowledge & Working Experience with (at least 2 systems):
  
  

Audio / Visual:

• AV system design for meeting rooms, hospitality spaces, auditoriums, conference rooms, ballrooms, retail areas and public spaces.
• Background music, speaker layouts, AV signal flow, control systems, digital signage, IPTV and room technology integration.
• Coordination of AV requirements with architecture, interiors, acoustics, IT networks, power and containment systems.
• Specialist AV calculations, acoustic inputs, line-of-sight studies and performance criteria where applicable.
  
  

ICT:

• Structured cabling systems for internal and external plant, including copper, fibre and telecommunications pathways.
• Telecommunications spaces including entrance rooms, telecom rooms, GSM rooms, IDF rooms, MDF rooms, equipment rooms and server rooms.
• Data centres, control rooms and technical spaces, including rack layouts, containment, power, cooling and cable management coordination.
• Active Network design
• LAN/WAN infrastructure, IP telephony, wireless networks and coordination of active network requirements with relevant specialists or vendors.
• Wi-Fi coverage studies, heat maps, network infrastructure requirements and ICT system performance criteria.
  
  

Security Systems:

• Security system design including CCTV, access control, intrusion detection, intercom, visitor management, security management systems, ANPR, parking interface systems and hostile vehicle mitigation coordination.
• Security device layouts, field-of-view drawings, coverage studies, schematics, equipment schedules, control room layouts and equipment room requirements.
• Coordination of security systems with ICT networks, power, containment, architectural layouts, access strategy and operational requirements.
• Authority requirements, approval processes, security IP network requirements, rack space, cable management, power and cooling considerations.
  
  

BGV:
