Job Description
As a Principal GIS Consultant within WSP's Transformation & Digital Insights team, you'll provide senior technical leadership, ensure operational excellence, and shape the geospatial strategy across major programmes. You will leaddelivery on complex multidisciplinary projects, oversee and mentor junior staff, maintain strong client relationships, and act as a trusted advisor to senior stakeholders.
In this strategic role, you will drive standards, innovation, and continuous improvement across the geospatialdomainleveraging emerging technologies such as cloud GIS, automation, data science, machine learning, and AIdriven spatial analytics. You will play a key role in modernising workflows, improving efficiency through automation, and embedding intelligent geospatial capabilities within projects. You will also contribute to bids, resource planning, capability development, and the longterm strategic roadmap for the team.
Responsibilities
GIS & TECHNICAL LEADERSHIP
Lead highlevel consultancy: define solution architectures, roadmaps, and investment priorities.

Govern enterprise and project geodatabases; set data governance and security standards.
Oversee complex analyses and services; approve deliverables and ensure QMS compliance.
Govern WebGIS (AGOL/ArcGIS Enterprise & apps) for major programmesavailability, performance, and
security.
Drive teamwide documentation, SOPs, training materials, and technical upskilling.
Identify and deliver innovations that enhance capability and client outcomes.
PROJECT DELIVERY
Lead GIS delivery on strategic, multidisciplinary programmes; manage risks/dependencies.
Provide guidance on best practice, performance, scalability, and sustainability of solutions.
RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
Assist the GIS Manager/Lead with portfoliolevel resource planning across team
Forecast and balance peaks/troughs; ensure delivery to budget, schedule, and quality.
Promote Advisory services internally and externally; strengthen client relationships.
PEOPLE & PRACTICE
Line manage and mentor; support career paths and training plans.
Ensure Safety, Health & Wellbeing compliance for reportees.
Contribute to the digital strategy and roadmap; advocate for datadriven decisionmaking.
Essential Skills
12+ years of GIS experience with leadership of complex workstreams.
Extensive, handson expertise across the Esri ecosystem (ArcGIS Pro, Enterprise Geodatabases, ArcGIS
Enterprise/Online) and enterprise solution architecture.
Proven leadership of complex GIS programmes with portfolio oversight and governance.
Advanced data management, enterprise geodatabase patterns (versioning, branching, security).
Strong automation capability (Python/ArcPy, ArcGIS Python API) and productiongrade pipelines.
Deep experience with web GIS solutions and service lifecycle (availability, performance, observability).
Ability to influence stakeholders; excellent communication, proposal writing, and presentation.
Experience managing distributed teams and coordinating crossregion delivery.
Proficiency in Microsoft 365 and Jira and resource management.
Desirable Skills
Broad fluency across opensource, API integrations and cloud patterns.
Programming: SQL, ArcGIS Python, Arcade, HTML, CSS, Javascript.
CAD/BIM integrations (Revit, Civil 3D); imagery/raster analytics
Experience with UK authoritative datasets and data governance.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in GIS, Geography, or a related geospatial discipline.
12+ years professional experience with programme leadership and line management.
Member/Fellow/Chartership of a relevant professional institution.
