Power System Engineer Intern

Full-Time

Location: Thiruvananthapuram


We are seeking a Power System Engineer Intern with a strong interest in Distributed Energy Resources (DER) integration and power system analysis. This role focuses on modeling, simulation, and analysis of DER‑rich power systems using modern, open‑source power system tools. The intern will work on real‑world grid planning and operational problems related to solar, storage, EVs, flexible loads, and active distribution networks.

This position is well suited for candidates who enjoy analytical work, working with data and models, and exploring next‑generation grid operation and planning approaches.

Key responsibilities

· Assist with power flow and network analysis for transmission and distribution systems with high DER penetration

· Develop and validate power system models using open‑source tools such as PyPSA and pandapower

· Support analysis of DER integration scenarios including solar PV, battery storage, EV charging, and flexible loads

· Perform steady‑state studies such as load flow, voltage analysis, congestion analysis, and loss analysis

· Support time‑series simulations for DER behavior and network impacts

· Assist in scenario analysis for grid planning, hosting capacity, and operational studies

· Work with grid datasets including network topology, asset parameters, and DER profiles

· Document modeling assumptions, methodologies, and analysis results

· Collaborate with power system engineers, data engineers, and software developers on integrated analysis workflows

Requirements

Required qualifications

· Currently pursuing or recently completed a masters in Power Systems, Energy Systems, or a related field

· Strong fundamentals in power system analysis, especially load flow concepts

· Understanding of DER concepts such as inverter‑based generation, net load, flexibility, and aggregation

· Experience or coursework involving power system modeling or simulation

· Working knowledge of Python for analysis and modeling

· Ability to understand and work with single‑line diagrams and network models

· Strong problem‑solving and analytical skills

· Good written and verbal communication skills

Preferred skills (nice to have)

· Hands‑on experience with PyPSA, pandapower, or similar open‑source power system frameworks

· Familiarity with time‑series simulations and scenario‑based analysis

· Exposure to optimization concepts used in power systems (OPF, capacity expansion, unit commitment – conceptual level is sufficient)

· Experience working with DER datasets such as solar generation profiles, load profiles, or EV charging data

· Basic familiarity with distribution system analysis and unbalanced systems

· Exposure to grid modernization topics such as DERMS, flexibility markets, or active network management

· Academic projects, internships, or research related to DER or renewable integration
