Job Description

Hardware Expert - Electromechanical & Drive Systems

to join our team at KTEC, Chennai, India, within the KONE Machinery and Drive Organization in KONE R&D.

This is a senior individual contributor role where you will act as a technical authority for complex electromechanical and drive hardware systems, shaping architecture, platform decisions, and long‑term technology direction.

What is our challenge for you

As a Hardware Expert with 15+ years of experience, you will take end‑to‑end ownership of complex hardware platforms-from concept and architecture through validation, industrialization, and lifecycle support.

You will work closely with software, mechanical, and system engineering teams to ensure robust hardware designs that meet performance, safety, reliability, cost, and sustainability goals, while also mentoring engineers and influencing technical decision‑making across the organization.

Your key responsibilities include:

  • Acting as a hardware technical authority for electromechanical and inverter‑based drive systems
  • Defining and reviewing hardware architectures, system interfaces, and design concepts
  • Leading the design and validation of power electronics, control electronics, and related subsystems
  • Driving hardware-software-mechanical integration across product platforms
  • Ensuring compliance with functional safety, regulatory, and certification requirements
  • Supporting technical decision‑making throughout development, industrialization, and field operations
  • Leading complex root‑cause analysis and resolution of hardware and system‑level issues
  • Reviewing schematics, designs, and validation results to ensure KONE quality standards
  • Mentoring and coaching engineers as a recognized expert
  • Contributing to technology roadmaps, reuse strategies, and long‑term platform evolution

To be successful in this role, we expect you to have:

  • 15+ years of experience in hardware engineering within industrial electronics, drives, automation, automotive, or other high‑reliability domains
  • Strong expertise in power electronics, control electronics, and electromechanical systems, including inverter‑based platforms
  • Proven experience in hardware architecture definition, design reviews, and system‑level trade‑offs
  • Deep understanding of hardware-software co‑design, interfaces, timing, and real‑time constraints
  • Solid fundamentals in embedded systems and low‑level software interaction, with working knowledge of C/C++ sufficient to collaborate effectively with embedded and control software teams
  • Strong understanding of control systems, including feedback loops and motor/control‑related concepts, and their impact on hardware design
  • Familiarity with microcontroller‑ or DSP‑based control platforms used in real‑time embedded systems
  • Good system‑level understanding of motor control concepts, including PMSM, Induction Motors, Field‑Oriented Control (FOC), and basic control theory
  • Experience using MATLAB/Simulink or equivalent tools for system modeling, control analysis, or design validation
  • Knowledge of real‑time operating environments (RTOS) and their implications on hardware and system design
  • Strong understanding of power electronics, inverter architectures, PWM strategies, and protection concepts
  • Extensive hands‑on laboratory experience, including debugging, validation, and failure analysis
  • Proficient use of lab instruments such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, current probes, and power analyzers
  • Experience working with safety‑critical or regulated products, supporting certification and compliance activities
  • Ability to act as a technical authority, mentor others, and communicate complex technical topics clearly in a global, multicultural environment

What can we offer you

You will play a critical role in shaping the hardware foundation of KONE's next‑generation drive and machinery platforms, directly impacting safety, ride quality, energy efficiency, and sustainability worldwide.

This role offers:

  • High technical autonomy and expert‑level influence
  • Opportunities to define long‑term technology direction and platforms
  • Collaboration with top experts across global KONE R&D
  • Access to state‑of‑the‑art laboratories and real product environments
