Prevention and Management of Aggression & Violence (PMAV) Tutor

Location: PMAV Training Unit, NHS Borders

An opportunity has arisen for a person to join the Occupational Health and Safety Team, which includes Health & Safety, Prevention and Management of Aggression & Violence, Lone Working, Personal Safety and Moving and Handling. The vacancy is for the role of PMAV Tutor full time 36 hrs/four day week permanent position.

We are looking for someone who is passionate about staff and patient safety, making a difference to the patient pathway, who is enthusiastic and confident and can represent our organisation to deliver training to both internal and external staff. This is a physically challenging role so the candidate will need to have a good standard of physical fitness, be adaptable and able to demonstrate the techniques with accuracy and consistency to all grades of staff, across the range of services.

Ideally this is a perfect opportunity for an individual who is caring and compassionate with a thirst for learning and continued professional development to enable the delivery of physical intervention techniques, undertaking aggression and violence risk assessments, support wards/staff with adverse events/care plans.

It is preferred that the candidate holds an appropriate physical intervention technique qualification, has the ability to demonstrate excellent communication, with computer skills, and have existing experience in health care, staff education, development of training programmes relating to aggression and violence and knowledge of personal safety training.

To deliver an effective service it is essential that you are able to commute (car owner/driver etc) across NHS Borders sites in a timely manner, with occasional out of area travel.

If the successful candidate does not hold a current GSA Grade A Instructor Certificate, they would be expected to attend a fully funded three-week (external) tutor course, venue and date to be confirmed. This post is subject to a six-month probationary period for candidates to achieve Grade A Tutor status.

Interview format will comprise of a formal interview and a practical gym session: -

How would you reduce aggression and violence in health care settings, with an explanation and evidence to support your theory

  • The group session will cover various physical intervention techniques within the gym environment, candidates will be expected to adhere to the safety requirements: - candidates require toe and heel enclosed flat shoe (trainer style), dignified loose comfortable clothing and be able to participate fully in the session including, standing, seated and floor work.

As from 1st April 2026 the Agenda for Change full-time working week will be reducing from 37 to 36 hours per week. Part time hours will be reduced pro-rata. However, there will be a corresponding increase in the hourly rate so that pay will not be affected.

Due to legislative changes from 1 April 2025, this post may require a different level of criminal records check done than is currently the case. If the post is assessed as a regulated role, your appointment will be subject to joining the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme.
