About the Role
We are seeking a skilled Application Developer specializing in Mainframe PL/I and Modernization to support enterprise modernization initiatives involving legacy mainframe systems and cloud transformation. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience in mainframe PL/I application development, modernization frameworks, and cloud migration approaches.
This role involves developing, maintaining, and supporting modernization solutions, enabling seamless migration of legacy PL/I applications to modern cloud-native environments while ensuring system stability, scalability, and business continuity. Japanese language proficiency is mandatory for collaboration with global stakeholders and project teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, enhance, and debug solutions for in-place mainframe modernization and migration of legacy PL/I applications to cloud platforms.
- Support modernization initiatives involving z-cloud and other cloud migration environments.
- Analyze complex, existing mainframe PL/I application code bases and contribute to modernization and transformation strategies.
- Develop, test, and maintain application code using both mainframe languages (PL/I, COBOL) and modern application technologies.
- Collaborate with architects, project teams, and stakeholders to deliver scalable and efficient modernization solutions.
- Support the integration of modern APIs, microservices, and cloud-native architectures with legacy PL/I applications.
- Ensure seamless migration with minimal disruption to business operations and services.
- Participate in troubleshooting, issue resolution, testing, and deployment activities.
- Follow development standards, DevOps practices, and security guidelines throughout the software lifecycle.
- Prepare technical documentation, code migration plans, and deployment procedures.
Required Skills & Experience
- Experience: 3–5 years of experience in application development with a strong focus on mainframe modernization projects.
- Core Mainframe Expertise: Deep understanding of mainframe technologies, data structures, and modernization concepts.
- Hands-on Technical Skills:
- PL/I (Programming Language One) — Expertise in written code analysis, restructuring, and development is highly preferred

- WebSphere / MQ
- Java / JSON
- APIs and Microservices
- Kubernetes
- DevOps practices
- Cloud & Architecture: Knowledge of cloud migration methodologies and hybrid architecture environments. Familiarity with SaaS, edge computing, network security, and off-premises application environments.
- Soft Skills: Strong analytical, debugging, and problem-solving skills. Ability to work collaboratively in cross-functional and global project environments with good communication and documentation skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
- Experience in cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and enterprise-scale modernization programs.
- Exposure to Agile development methodologies and CI/CD pipelines is an advantage.
