Job Purpose

The position is based at Delhi and needs to manage Material movement across Pan India ensuring timely availability of material, to bring synergy between Sales/Marketing and Logistics Function for Material movement planning, ensuring timely delivery and cost-effective movement of Goods, execute the logistics plan as per SnOP Plan at PAN India level with optimum cost.

Job Context & Major Challenges

Birla White (BW) is White Cement division of UltraTech Cement Limited and is a P&L centre. In India, BW is leader in White Cement and Wall Care Putty with WC installed capacity of 680,000 MT per annum and Wall Care Putty capacity of 8,00,000 MT per annum. The overall volume would increase from 14,76,000 MT per annum to 20,86,000 MT per annum with the installation of Nathdwara plant.

During last 10 years Birla White has grown from a single commodity product to significant value added and specialty products, such as Wall Care Putty, Textura, Level Plast, Birla White liquid primer, Distemper, GRC, 4 variants of fragrance putty, Bio Shield Putty, Waterproofing putty, etc. Further these products are offered in 80 + varied SKUs ranging from 01 kg pack to 1500 kg pack, with multiple packing requirements.

Birla White plant is fully integrated and automated processing. The plant is accredited with ISO 9002, ISO 14001, SA 8000, and ISO45000 and ISO 27001.

The logistics function is responsible for outbound logistics covering primary and secondary transportation as well as monitoring optimum levels of finished products at depot locations.

Challenges:

  • Order Collection from All india based sales offices/depots for rake generation in a time bound manner to load rakes from all BW plants.
  • SKU availability in Plant always a issue in plant which requires frequent change in order level.
  • Monthly rake planning based on inventory level at depot SnOP of that particular month.
  • Empty Concor rake generation points are 400-500Kms distance away from BW Plants which always becomes a very difficult task for timely availability of rakes in plants.
  • Track empty and loaded rakes movement for on time placement.
  • Contact plant logistics team for tracking on going rake loading position for placement of empty rakes and removal of loaded rakes.
  • Container Freight rate negotiation from Concor to get freight advantage from competitor players in market.
  • Container movement from terminal to various depots/customers in view of free days inventory at Concor terminal/lease/demands and minimum logistics cost.
  • Last mile transportation freight rates are vey dynamic in nature which is a biggest challenge to have a close watch of competitive freight market to provide service to customer at a minimum logistics cost.

Coastal shipping movement is highly volatile due to seasonal fluctutations and availability of slot for loading of ship and close monitoring to clear the cargo from port to avoid demurrage charges.

KRA1Demand Planning
  • Ensure preparation of monthly rake plan for all plants.
  • Collection of orders based on the available rake size(90/80Teu's) from sales team/depots.
  • Sending all orders to plant logistics team to ensure rake generation before rake arrival at plant.
  • Making necessary changes in orders based on the material availability in the plant.
  • Works as a catalyst between plant logistics team and sales team to ensure rake dispatch is maximised and material is timely dispatched to market.
  • Plan Coastal movement of rake and ensure side access new containers are provided at Kharia for loading of coastal consignment.
  • Ensure dispatch documents like rake invoices,container IWB's ,E-Way Bills and Gst Invoices are made available to sales team before rake arrival at terminal.

KRA2Rake Planning
  • Ensure timely placement of rake indent to Concor as per rake plan and ensure rake allotment through Concor to all plants as per rake plan
  • Arranging types of rakes(BLC/BLL,N Rake) with end opening/side access containers as per plant requirement.
  • Collection of rake orders from all sales offices/depots for rake generation before rake placement.
  • To take decision whether rake needs to be placed for loading -Online/Offline at Kharia on the basis of product mix.
  • Ensuring rake movement in such a way that time gap can be maintained between two rakes which wil maximise the dispatches.
  • Plan rake in such a way so that stabling charges can be reduced without sacrificing rake supplies.
  • Tracking of En-route missing containers and follow with Concor authorities at various levels so that those containers can be delivered to the respective places.

KRA3Finalization of Container Freight
  • Freight negotiation to be done before freight rates finalization so as to avail best competitive freight rates for BW.
  • Benefits like free number of days at unloading station,last mile container delivery rates etc to be explored.
  • Find out alternatives of competitive rates from various container operators other than Concor and prepare comparative statements for analysis and decision making activities.

KRA4Co-ordination with Railways,Concor and Sales Team
  • Coordinate with all relevant offices of Railways and CONCOR, on All-India basis, for timely rake planning and trans-shipment planning on daily basis.
  • In pro-active coordination with the concerned sales team to ensure the Optimum Stock Level in the Depots (Godowns) is maintained so that the Customer at these locations doesn't face a stock-out situation.
  • Co-ordinate with concern depot incharge/C&F for timely delivery of containers.
  • Explore possibility of cost savings by way of conversion from door delivery to terminal delivery and vice versa.
  • Information of rake movement to be updated to sales team i.e to Zonal head/State head on daily basis so as to plan delivery of containers at terminal.
  • Registration/KYC of new customers at originating as well as at ending point terminal of Concor.
Co-ordinate with Concor officials for extending credit limit facility to BW,
KRA5Coastal Movement
  • Rate negotiations with various coastal shipping line and finalize competitive freight which is lesser than rail freight.
  • Collection of monthly shipping schedule from the lines and load the rakes accordingly.
Doing regular follow up with the lines for return of empty containers and hand over to Concor.

Market Intelligence
  • Monitor competitor freight rates and constantly updating the information to plant logistics team/management.
  • Explore new Rail Heads/Yard and do the cost benefit analysis.
  • Exploring possibility of Supply by rake where full rake qty is not available /Vendor searching for Collaborative /partnership rake loading to cater small area market for mutual benefit.
  • Explore possibility of yard firing from terminal.
