Pedagogy Expert - Foundational Literacy and Numeracy

Location: New Delhi, India

Experience: 10+ years of relevant experience

Engagement Type: Consultant | 6-month contract, extendable based on program needs

About Us

Wadhwani AI Global (WAIG) is a next-generation AI transformation partner for governments and multilaterals across Africa, Latin America, and Asia. We combine cutting-edge AI products with deep advisory capabilities to unlock large-scale opportunities in health, education, and agriculture.

Role Overview

We are looking for a Pedagogy Expert – Foundational Learning to strengthen the learning design behind WAIG's foundational education tools, including Oral Reading Fluency (ORF) and other AI-enabled literacy and assessment solutions.

The consultant will bring deep expertise in foundational learning solutions, reading fluency, language acquisition, and assessment design, with the ability to adapt these concepts for public education contexts across Africa.

This role is ideal for someone who understands how children learn English as an additional or second language, and can translate that understanding into practical product guidance, content frameworks, assessment logic, and classroom-ready learning tools.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strengthen English Learning Pedagogy
  • Define pedagogical principles for early-grade English learning tools
  • Build learning progressions for reading, listening, speaking, and comprehension
  • Ensure tools reflect how children acquire English in multilingual contexts
  • Ground solution design in evidence-based literacy and language learning practices
  • Design Foundational Literacy & ORF Frameworks
  • Develop frameworks for oral reading fluency, decoding, vocabulary, and comprehension
  • Define indicators for accuracy, pace, expression, pronunciation, and meaning-making
  • Support design of grade-level texts, prompts, rubrics, and benchmarks
  • Ensure assessment tasks are developmentally appropriate and instructionally useful
  • Improve Learning Tools and Product Design
  • Work with product, AI, and data teams to improve learning journeys
  • Translate pedagogy into product requirements, feedback loops, and user flows
  • Review content, assessment logic, and AI-generated learning feedback
  • Ensure tools support learning improvement, not just measurement
  • Contextualize for Multi-Country Public Education Settings
  • Adapt English learning approaches for multilingual public education settings
  • Account for varied teacher capacity, classroom size, and infrastructure constraints
  • Support contextualization across countries, languages, and learner levels
  • Ensure tools are practical for low-resource and government school environments
  • Support Assessment, Research and Validation
  • Contribute to assessment design, scoring logic, and validation approaches
  • Help define meaningful learning, usage, and fluency metrics
  • Support pilots, classroom research, and review of learner evidence
  • Translate field insights into product and pedagogy improvements
  • Enable Teachers and Implementation Teams
  • Develop guidance for teachers and facilitators using the tools
  • Support teacher-facing materials, training content, and classroom integration models
  • Ensure outputs are simple, actionable, and useful for educators
  • Help document learnings, examples, and implementation insights

What You Will Own

You will own the pedagogical quality and learning integrity of WAIG's foundational learning tools. This includes ensuring that ORF and related AI-enabled solutions are grounded in strong pedagogy, adapted for multilingual public education systems, and capable of supporting measurable improvements in children's foundational literacy outcomes.

Success in this role means helping build tools that are educationally sound, contextually relevant, classroom-ready, and useful for students, teachers, and education systems across Africa.

What We Are Looking For

  • 10+ years of experience in foundational learning, literacy, pedagogy, curriculum, language acquisition, or reading fluency
  • Experience designing early grade reading assessments, oral reading fluency, english learning tools, or language learning frameworks
  • Understanding of how children learn English as a second or additional language
  • Familiarity with public education systems in low-resource or multilingual contexts
  • Ability to translate pedagogy into product features, assessment logic, and classroom workflows
  • Experience with EdTech, digital learning tools, or AI-enabled education solutions is a strong plus
  • Strong writing, communication, and ability to work with cross-functional teams
  • Comfort working with product, AI, data science, program, and field implementation teams
  • Willingness to travel for classroom research, pilots, and stakeholder engagement
