An Oracle Database Administrator (DBA) is responsible for the overall health, performance, and security of an organization's Oracle database systems. Their role ranges from physical installation and configuration to high-level strategic planning and performance tuning.
Oracle Database Administrator (DBA) includes deep technical expertise in Oracle database architecture, SQL/PLSQL, and backup/recovery (RMAN), coupled with strong problem-solving, analytical skills, and proactive monitoring capabilities. Key skills also include proficiency in operating systems (Linux/Unix), cloud proficiency (OCI), performance tuning, security management, and automation using scripting
- Architecture & Design: Design and implement highly available and scalable Oracle database systems using Oracle RAC, Data Guard, and Automatic Storage Management (ASM).
- High-End Performance Tuning: Perform advanced proactive optimization using tools like AWR (Automatic Workload Repository), ASH (Active Session History), and SQL Trace to identify and resolve deep-seated bottlenecks.
- Complex Migrations & Upgrades: involve moving data and upgrading versions (e.g., 11g/12c to 19c/23ai) with minimal downtime, often using Oracle Auto Upgrade for upgrades or OCI Database Migration for cloud moves. Key techniques include Data Pump, Transportable Tablespaces, RMAN, and Data Guard, designed to handle large databases and complex schema changes securely.
- Disaster Recovery Planning: Architect and periodically test robust Disaster Recovery (DR) strategies, ensuring strict adherence to Recovery Point Objective (RPO) and Recovery Time Objective (RTO) targets.
- Automation & Scripting: Develop sophisticated automation workflows using Shell, Python, or Ansible to streamline repetitive tasks like patching, health checks, and provisioning.
Leadership & Strategic Roles
- Mentorship: Provide technical guidance and pastoral care to junior DBAs, helping them set objectives and improve their technical proficiency.
- Stakeholder Management: Work closely with application developers and business managers to align database architecture with organizational goals and project requirements.
- Security & Compliance Enforcement: Implement advanced security features like Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) and ensure the environment meets regulatory standards (e.g., GDPR, SOC2, or STIG compliance).
- Escalation Point: Serve as the ultimate subject matter expert for critical production issues, leading root cause analysis (RCA) for major incidents.
- Capacity Planning: Forecast hardware and storage requirements to accommodate long-term business growth and data surges
Qualification:
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology, BCA/MCA or related field. Preferred Certifications (Nice to Have): Advanced certifications such as Oracle Certified Professional (OCP) or Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Architect are highly preferred.
Desired Experience Level
- 8- 12 Years relevant experience in oracle DBA, MS SQL DBA and Linux Platform
