The role
We're looking for an Operations Automation Engineer to join our Operations function and help us build smarter, faster and more scalable ways of working. The Operations function mainly executes processes to mitigate risks to Modulr across multiple tasks, covering Money Laundering/Terrorist Financing, Fraud, Sanctions and other Financial Crime risks. As the function grows, the ability to deliver well‑designed, efficient and scalable processes becomes increasingly critical.
This is a hands‑on, delivery‑focused role for someone early in their engineering or automation career who enjoys working close to operations, solving real problems, and implementing practical technical solutions. You will focus on building and improving tooling, workflows, scripts and lightweight automation that support Operational teams operating at scale. The Operations Automation Engineer will be responsible for analysing existing processes, identifying opportunities for improvement, and designing and implementing change that strengthens our control environment while driving efficiency. This includes supporting automation initiatives, improving documentation, ensuring changes land effectively with operational teams, and partnering with Product, Engineering and SMEs to deliver enhancements that scale with the business.
You do not need deep Financial Crime or Compliance experience to succeed in this role. What matters most is your ability to understand operational problems and turn them into effective, well‑designed technical solutions in a controlled environment.
Specific duties
- Analysing existing operational processes across Payment Operations, Screening, Fraud, and Onboarding to identify opportunities for improvement, automation and simplification.
- Designing and implementing process changes that enhance efficiency, strengthen controls and support scalable growth.
- Contributing to a culture of continuous improvement, ensuring processes evolve in line with regulatory expectations, business growth and operational needs.
- Work directly with frontline operations teams to understand pain points and design practical, scalable solutions that reduce manual effort and improve consistency.
- Own small‑to‑medium automation initiatives end‑to‑end, from problem definition and design through to build, testing, deployment and iteration.
- Maintain and enhance existing operational tools, scripts and dashboards, ensuring they remain reliable, well‑documented and fit for purpose.
- Translate operational requirements into clear technical solutions, balancing speed, quality and control.
- Support safe and controlled change by documenting solutions clearly and ensuring they land effectively with operational teams.
- Use data and performance insight to identify opportunities for further automation or workflow improvement.
- Partner with Product and Engineering teams where deeper system changes are required, while remaining accountable for operations‑side delivery.
- Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement, curiosity and problem‑solving within Operations.
About You
We're looking for someone who brings a technical, builder mindset, rather than a traditional compliance or change background.
- 1–3 years experience in an engineering, automation, technical operations or similar role.
- Hands‑on experience building solutions using one or more of the following:
- Scripting or programming (e.g. Python, SQL, JavaScript or similar)
- Low‑code / no‑code tools
- Workflow, case management or operational platforms
- Dashboards, reporting or operational MI tooling
- You understand the importance of strong governance and controlled change, and you're comfortable designing and improving operational processes.
- You bring strong analytical skills and can translate data, trends and operational insight into meaningful recommendations.
- You have experience delivering or supporting change, whether through process redesign, automation, or operational improvement.
- You're structured, organised and able to balance short‑term tasks with longer‑term initiatives.
- You communicate clearly, influence effectively and work well with stakeholders across Operations, Product and Engineering.
- You're comfortable working in a fast‑paced, evolving environment and enjoy taking ownership of problems and seeing them through to resolution.
- You have a strong interest in automation and efficiency, and you naturally look for ways to streamline processes and improve outcomes.
- You enjoy sharing knowledge, collaborating with others and contributing to a high‑performing operational culture.
- You are proactive, curious and solutions‑focused, with a strong ability to identify risks, understand controls and support continuous improvement.
