Responsibilities:
- Identify and mitigate legal risks associated with the use, modification, and distribution of open source software.
- Provide expert legal advice on open source software licensing, compliance, and strategy to internal stakeholders including developers, engineers, product managers, and executives.
- Advise other attorneys on open source matters and help adapt review processes to meet dynamic industry changes.
- Develop and implement comprehensive open source compliance programs, including policies, procedures, and training to ensure adherence to open source licensing requirements.
- Formulate and maintain internal policies and best practices regarding the use and contribution to open source projects.
- Conduct legal due diligence on open source software components used in HPE products and services, ensuring proper licensing and compliance.
- Design and deliver training programs for HPE employees on open source software policies, legal risks, and best practices.
- Provide legal support for transactions involving open source software, including mergers and acquisitions, partnerships, and software licensing agreements.
- Work closely with cross-functional teams including engineering, product management, compliance, and procurement to ensure alignment and understanding of open source policies and strategies.
- Manage and resolve legal disputes related to open source software, including infringement claims and license compliance issues.
- Support the expansion of open source reviews into other areas of open technology investment, such as open data, open AI models, open standards, etc.
What you need to bring:
Education and Experience Required:
- Advanced university degree in law (e.g. JD or LLB).
- Meets local legal license requirements.
- Typically, 3-7 years of legal experience, with a significant focus on IP and open source software licensing and compliance.
- In-depth knowledge of open source licenses (e.g., GPL, LGPL, Apache, MIT) plus non-open source licenses (e.g., SSPL, BUSL) and their implications for intellectual property and software development and distribution.
- Ability to engage in tooling to facilitate reviews such as scanners (e.g., FNCI, BlackDuck, etc.) and workflow (e.g., Jira)
- Strong understanding of open source development practices and culture.
- Demonstrated leadership in developing and implementing legal strategies and policies related to open source software and training others.
- Well-developed level of business experience supporting clients or advising on legal matters such as product launches and M&A due diligence.
- Strong analytical, negotiation, and communication skills. Ability to effectively communicate complex legal concepts to non-legal stakeholders.
- Demonstrated understanding of legal negotiation or counseling.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, cross-functional environment.
- English language skills to business standard.
