GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF ROLE:

Microsoft 365 Email, Messaging & Teams Senior Architect will be responsible for leading the design, governance, and evolution of enterprise email, messaging, and collaboration platforms across the Microsoft 365 ecosystem. This role is responsible for defining the end-to-end service architecture for Exchange Online, Microsoft Teams, and related messaging services, ensuring alignment with business objectives, security requirements, and the broader enterprise IT landscape.

ROLES & RESPOSIBILITY:

Architecture & Design

  • Define and maintain the end-to-end architecture for Exchange Online (mail flow, hybrid messaging, transport rules, connectors) and Microsoft Teams (voice, video, chat, meetings, integrations)
  • Architect scalable, resilient solutions for enterprise email, including mail routing, SMTP, SPF, DKIM, DMARC, DNSSEC, connectors, and transport rules
  • Design integration patterns across Exchange Online, SharePoint, OneDrive, Azure AD/Entra ID, Microsoft Purview, and third-party applications
  • Translate business requirements into secure, supportable, and future-proof technical solutions for collaboration and messaging
  • Develop and maintain architecture documentation, service blueprints, and solution diagrams
  • Own the Exchange Online and hybrid Exchange architecture, ensuring optimal mail flow, deliverability, and email lifecycle management
  • Design and govern email security solutions, including DLP policies, encryption, anti-spam/anti-phishing, and email gateway integrations (e.g., Proofpoint, ACS)
  • Lead migrations from legacy messaging platforms (on-premises Exchange, Lotus Domino, third-party SMTP) to Exchange Online
  • Architect and manage hybrid identity and messaging environments, ensuring seamless coexistence during transitions
  • Design and govern Teams apps, integrations, bots, and Copilot agents within the enterprise
  • Architect B2B federation, guest access, and external collaboration governance models
  • Support the architecture for Teams Premium features, including advanced meetings, webinars, town halls, and compliance recording

Strategic Compliance & Governance

  • Ensure architectural alignment with security, identity, access management, and compliance requirements across all messaging and collaboration services
  • Partner with Security and Compliance teams to define and enforce data retention, legal hold, eDiscovery, and information protection policies
  • Lead architectural reviews, risk assessments, and technology evaluations for messaging and collaboration platforms
  • Define and enforce governance frameworks for Teams provisioning, lifecycle management, and workspace policies
  • Stay current with the Microsoft 365 roadmap and industry best practices evaluate new features and recommend adoption strategies
  • Provide technical leadership during service transitions, M&A integrations, and major upgrades
  • Collaborate with Service Owners, Engineers, Operations teams, and executive stakeholders to ensure architectural alignment
  • Author and present technology roadmaps, executive reports, and architectural blueprints to leadership
  • Mentor and guide engineering and operations teams on best practices and emerging capabilities.

SKILLS/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

Essential Skills and Experience

  • 10+ years in enterprise IT with at least 5+ years focused on Microsoft 365, Exchange, and Teams architecture
  • Deep expertise in Exchange Online administration, hybrid Exchange, mail flow, transport rules, connectors, and email security.
  • Strong knowledge of Teams architecture - Teams App, Voice, Teams Rooms, compliance features, and app integrations
  • Proficiency in Azure AD/Entra ID, conditional access, MFA, identity governance, and cloud security.
  • Advanced PowerShell scripting experience with Microsoft Graph API and Power Platform.
  • Hands-on experience with email security solutions (DLP, encryption, SPF/DKIM/DMARC, email gateways)
  • Familiarity with enterprise architecture frameworks (e.g., TOGAF)
  • Experience with ITIL practices and service management tools (e.g., ServiceNow)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Microsoft Certifications: MS-700 (Managing Microsoft Teams), MS-102 (Microsoft 365 Administrator), SC-100 (Cybersecurity Architect)
  • TOGAF or equivalent enterprise architecture certification
  • Experience with Copilot, AI-powered collaboration tools, and modern workplace technologies

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent work experience)
  • Master's degree or advanced certifications preferred
