About the role:
The Head Nursery Operations will be responsible for leading the strategic planning, establishment, and management of large-scale plant nurseries. This leadership role involves developing nurseries from scratch, standardizing nursery systems, and ensuring consistent production of high-quality planting material to support agroforestry, permaculture, and plantation projects.
The role requires strong technical expertise, operational leadership, and the ability to manage multi-location nursery operations while building scalable and sustainable nursery infrastructure aligned with the group's long-term agricultural and environmental goals.
Key Responsibilities
1. Strategic Planning & Nursery Establishment
- Lead the end-to-end planning, design, and establishment of plant nurseries from ground zero across multiple locations.
- Define nursery production strategies aligned with plantation, agroforestry, and permaculture project requirements.
- Establish SOPs, quality standards, and best practices for nursery development and plant production.
2. Planning, Monitoring & Reporting
- Develop nursery production plans based on project timelines and plantation requirements.
- Monitor plant inventory, production cycles, and nursery output. Implement tracking systems for plant survival, performance, and quality control.
- Provide periodic operational reports and strategic inputs to senior management.
3. Technical Expertise & Plant Production Management
- Oversee plant propagation through seeds, grafting, budding, cuttings, layering, and other propagation methods.
- Ensure optimal growing media preparation, irrigation management, and nutrient management. Implement integrated pest and disease management systems.
- Ensure production of high-quality planting material suitable for large-scale plantation and agroforestry projects.
4. Leadership & Team Development
- Build, lead, and manage nursery teams, provide technical training on plant propagation, nursery practices, and plant health management.
- Establish performance standards and ensure operational efficiency across all nursery locations.
5. Strategic Contribution & Project Coordination
- Work closely with Farm Managers, Agronomists, Permaculture Specialists, and Project Teams.
- Support agroforestry, regenerative agriculture, and plantation expansion initiatives.
- Contribute to long-term nursery expansion and sustainability strategy.
- Ensure nursery operations align with the organization's environmental and sustainability goals.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Horticulture/Agriculture/Plant Science/Nursery Management or related field
- Minimum 10 years of experience in nursery development and management.
- Proven experience in establishing and managing large-scale plant nurseries from scratch.
- Strong expertise in nursery infrastructure planning and plant propagation systems
- Deep knowledge of tropical and subtropical plant species
- Strong leadership and multi-location team management capability
- Excellent planning, organizational, and operational management skills
- Ability to develop scalable nursery systems
- Willingness to travel extensively and work in field-based environments
