Job Description

About Us: Magma Group is a fast-growing industrial materials company building scalable businesses across recycling, engineering, and advanced materials. Headquartered in Ahmedabad, Magma serves 250+ manufacturers — from SMEs to large enterprises — with a strong focus on efficiency, reliability, and long-term value creation.

Magma Engineering & MRO is our newest vertical, built to act as an extended in-house engineering arm for factories. We deliver end-to-end solutions across precision engineering, machining, fabrication, and maintenance — from design to final delivery. Backed by a robust ecosystem of in-house capabilities and captive control over advanced machining and fabrication facilities, we operate across CNC, VMC, deep-hole drilling, honing, turn-milling, heavy fabrication, and precision inspection systems.

Position Overview: We are looking for a skilled Multi-Axis CNC Setter / Operator with hands-on experience in setting up and operating advanced 5-axis, multi-axis, and mill-turn CNC machines, including machines with up to 7-axis capability. The candidate will be responsible for machine setup, tool setting, program loading, first-piece inspection, and production monitoring to ensure dimensional accuracy, consistent quality, and efficient machine utilization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate advanced 5-axis, multi-axis, and mill-turn CNC machines, including machines with up to 7-axis capability, as per production requirements.
  • Perform machine setup activities, including fixture installation, workholding arrangement, tool mounting, tool setting, and offset adjustments.
  • Load, verify, and execute CNC programs developed by the CAD/CAM programming team.
  • Conduct machine probing, tool measurement, workpiece alignment, and coordinate setting to ensure accurate machining.
  • Support program prove-out, trial runs, and first-piece machining in coordination with the CAD/CAM Programmer and Senior Manager.
  • Verify the first piece against engineering drawings and specified dimensional tolerances before proceeding with batch production.
  • Monitor machining operations, cutting conditions, tool wear, and machine performance to maintain consistent output quality.
  • Carry out in-process inspection using appropriate measuring instruments and ensure dimensional conformity.
  • Identify and report machining deviations, tool failures, vibration, surface finish issues, and other process abnormalities.
  • Coordinate with CAD/CAM programmers, quality engineers, and production teams to resolve setup and machining-related issues.
  • Maintain setup sheets, tool lists, offset records, inspection reports, and other relevant production documentation.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting of machine, tooling, and process-related issues and escalate complex problems to the concerned team.
  • Follow approved work instructions, safety procedures, quality standards, and preventive maintenance practices.
  • Contribute to reducing setup time, improving tool life, minimizing rejections, and enhancing overall machine productivity.

Required Skills & Technical Expertise

  • Hands-on experience in setting and operating 5-axis and multi-axis CNC machines, with exposure to 7-axis and mill-turn machines.
  • Strong knowledge of CNC machine setup, fixture installation, workholding, tool setting, and tool/work offsets.
  • Practical experience with probing systems, workpiece alignment, tool measurement, and coordinate setting.
  • Familiarity with CNC controllers such as FANUC, Siemens, Heidenhain, Mazatrol, Haas, or Mitsubishi.
  • Ability to load, verify, and execute CNC programs and understand basic program logic.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, machining instructions, tolerances, and basic GD&T.
  • Knowledge of precision measuring instruments such as vernier calipers, micrometers, bore gauges, and dial indicators.
  • Understanding of cutting tools, machining parameters, tool wear, surface finish, and dimensional inspection.
  • Ability to identify machining issues and perform basic machine and process troubleshooting.
  • Strong attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and commitment to quality and workplace safety.

Educational Qualifications & preferred candidate role:

  • ITI, Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Production Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Relevant hands-on experience in multi-axis CNC machine setting and operation will be given significant consideration.
  • 5–10 years of experience in CNC machine setup and operation, preferably in precision engineering or complex component manufacturing.
  • Practical exposure to simultaneous 5-axis machining, multi-axis setups, and mill-turn operations.
  • Experience working with complex components requiring high dimensional accuracy and tight tolerances.
  • Ability to independently carry out machine setup and first-piece validation while coordinating with programming, quality, and production teams.
  • A safety-conscious, quality-focused, and disciplined approach to machine operation and process control.
