Group Underwriting Manual Development Lead (Life & Health)

Years of Experience: 5-8 Years

Job Summary: We are seeking a highly skilled Group Underwriting Manual Development Lead to take ownership of our Group Life & Health underwriting manual. This role requires a strategic thinker with a strong background in governance, risk, and compliance (GRC) to ensure that our underwriting standards are practical, executable, and aligned with our risk appetite. The ideal candidate will lead the modernization of our manual development process through innovative use of technology and AI, while also building and managing a high-performing team.

Responsibilities:

  • Group Underwriting Manual Ownership & Development
    • End-to-end ownership of the Group Life & Health underwriting manual, including structure, standards, taxonomy, and maintenance.
    • Lead drafting, modernization, and periodic refresh of underwriting guidance across medical, financial, occupational, residency, travel, and risk philosophy areas.
    • Ensure manuals are practical, executable, and aligned with underwriting risk appetite and operating realities.
  • R&D for Manual Development (AI / Data / Technology)
    • Lead R&D to transform manual development into a technology-enabled, AI-assisted process.
    • Apply AI, data, and automation to accelerate drafting, updates, consistency checks, and quality assurance.
    • Codify underwriting knowledge into structured logic and guidance that supports future digital and rules-based underwriting.
  • Governance, Controls & Version Management
    • Establish and maintain governance frameworks including authoring standards, approval workflows, version control, and release cadence.
    • Ensure auditability, traceability, and documented rationale for all manual changes.
    • Coordinate with Group Risk, Compliance, and Operations on governance expectations.
  • Cross-Market Engagement
    • Partner with Local Business Units to drive adoption of group underwriting standards while enabling appropriate localization.
    • Collaborate with Product, Pricing, Claims, Reinsurance, Operations, and Distribution to manage interdependencies.
  • Team Build & Capability Scaling
    • Build and lead a Bengaluru-based team comprising underwriting SMEs, technical writers, and AI/data specialists.
    • Define operating model, capacity planning, and performance metrics for the manual development function.
  • Mandatory Skills:

    • Strong expertise in Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC) frameworks.
    • Proven experience in underwriting manual development and management.
    • Experience with AI and data-driven processes in underwriting.

    Preferred Skills:

    • Familiarity with Life & Health insurance products.
    • Experience in leading cross-functional teams.
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business Administration, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
    • 5-8 years of relevant experience in underwriting, compliance, or risk management.
    • Proven track record of leading projects and teams in a fast-paced environment.
