Last Mile Planning team, within the LMT organization, is at the heart of our growing logistics network at Amazon. We build all the software that creates efficient route, station and capacity plans that operations uses to deliver billions of packages that Amazon customers order worldwide, right up to their doorsteps. We're challenged to constantly improve and innovate on our vehicle routing/planning software and tools to better support fast delivery to customers. The technology innovations that are developed by the Last Mile Technology team scale our growing network and include a wide breadth of solutions from ML and operations research-based routing and planning algorithms, our own in-house maps and navigation platform, IoT and hardware innovations, doorstep delivery experience, and the consumer grade native mobile apps that brings all these experiences together.

The Pre Station Planning Technology team is one of the critical teams supporting and enabling Last Mile operations for Amazon Worldwide. We build software for demand forecasting, capacity planning, jurisdiction and topology management and fleet planning among other areas. All of these services help estimate the precise number of stations, vehicles, drivers and routes to deliver billions of packages to customers worldwide and have a high impact on cost as well as deliver efficiency.

We are looking for a Software Development Manager with exceptional technical skills and a passion for delivering great software to join our team. As a member of this team, you will be responsible to own and deliver highly visible, innovative projects that directly impact the customer experience. You will be involved in driving the technical and architectural vision for a planning team that touches every Amazon package, as well as all the aspects of the software development cycle including scoping, design, implementation, testing & delivery of our product.

Key job responsibilities

  • Be responsible for the end to end ownership of a technology team, including setting the technical vision for developing our systems to serve Amazon's needs.
  • Build and manage great software engineers that are responsible for developing and maintaining software that ensures safety and compliance for our customers, associates and carrier partners.
  • Be a champion of engineering and operational excellence: establish team metrics for measurement of engineering and operational excellence and a consistent, regular process for assessment and improvement.
  • Establish a consistent, project management framework and excellent development processes to deliver high quality software, in rapid iterations, for business partners in multiple geographies.
  • Show strong business and technical judgment that will accelerate time to market of releases, while incrementally moving our services towards the long term vision.
  • Be responsible for mentoring and developing engineers.
  • Represent the technical organization and evangelize the work to business stakeholders and senior leadership.
  • Raise the bar on technical excellence, show thought leadership, and communicate well to different audiences.

A day in the life

  • Be part of discussions, brainstorming ideas with Product Managers, SMEs, SDMs etc.,
  • Drive tech team with Sprint execution, identify efficiencies, operational improvements and be part of design reviews, two-way door decisions etc.,
  • Have 1:1s with the team, cross-team SDMs, managers and skip managers
  • Drive the team and org vision with innovative solutions and think big ideas
  • Have a lots of customer obsession and deliver results.
  • Collaborate closely with partners, stakeholders, UX and others to help define the scope of the product.
  • Contribute to OP plans, OE/ EE/ KTLO

About The Team

Basic Qualifications

  • 3+ years of engineering team management experience
  • 7+ years of engineering experience
  • 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience
  • Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations
  • Experience partnering with product or program management teams

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
  • Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers
