POSITION SUMMARY

  • This position is responsible for establishing, building, and managing the Mechanical Engineering team at the Global Engineering Centre (GEC) in Pune, India. The Manager will lead a team of mechanical engineers responsible for designing modular buildings, mechanical structures, thermal engineering and product development in support of global project and product requirements.
  • The role combines technical leadership with people management, ensuring the GEC Pune team delivers high-quality mechanical design, structural analysis, thermal engineering and product documentation in alignment with international standards and demanding product development requirements.
  • The Manager will integrate design concepts across multiple disciplines including mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, structural engineering, and fire protection, while driving operational excellence, team capability building, and continuous improvement.
  • This is a critical leadership role that requires building the team from the ground up, establishing processes, and positioning GEC Pune as a Centre of Excellence for mechanical engineering delivery.
  • Build and scale the mechanical engineering team at GEC Pune, defining hiring plans, competency requirements, and team structure (Junior Engineers, Senior Engineers, Lead Engineers)
  • Develop and execute recruitment strategy to attract top mechanical engineering and thermal engineering talent in the Pune region
  • Establish structured onboarding programs, training roadmaps, and technical skill development plans for all team members
  • Conduct regular performance reviews, set individual and team goals, and drive career development and succession planning
  • Foster a high-performance culture with focus on Safety, Integrity, Respect, Teamwork, and Diversity & Inclusion
  • Manage team capacity planning, workload allocation, and resource utilization across multiple concurrent projects/products
  • Mentor and coach engineers to develop technical expertise and leadership capabilities

RESPONSIBILITIES

GEC Operations & Engineering Delivery

  • Establish and manage day-to-day operations of the mechanical engineering function at GEC Pune
  • Ensure the team delivers high-quality mechanical product and project documentation including: mechanical strength analysis, part and assembly drawings, detail drawings, structural calculations, material specifications, descriptions, instructions, presentations, and marketing materials, mechanical HVAC designs, single-line diagrams, cooling load calculations, Thermal load calculations, CFD analysis,
  • Define and implement design standards, templates, checklists, quality gates, and review processes for consistent global delivery
  • Drive adoption of design tools (AutoCAD, Revit, Inventor, SolidWorks, CREO, or CATIA) and ensure team proficiency
  • Oversee creation of product concepts and detailed designs for modular buildings and mechanical structures
  • Ensure all designs follow international, national, and company standards and good engineering practices
  • Manage development of defined documents according to Document Lists (DLIST)
  • Oversee preparation of workshop documentation for mechanical assemblies

Technical Oversight & Quality

  • Review and approve mechanical design documentation developed by team members and outsourced subcontractors
  • Provide technical approval/rejection for received supplier offers
  • Approve or reject proposed changes by subcontractors to approved workshop documentation
  • Ensure team performs accurate calculations for optimal component/material selection
  • Drive analysis and application of new components, materials, and technologies
  • Oversee structural design optimization initiatives
  • Ensure compliance with relevant international standards (EN, ISO, AISC, Eurocode, IS codes) across all deliverables
  • Conduct design reviews and technical audits to maintain engineering quality

Project & Stakeholder Management

  • Coordinate with global Product Development Managers, Lead Engineers, and Project teams to understand requirements and allocate GEC resources
  • Participate in and lead kick-off meetings, design reviews, and regular product/project team meetings as GEC Pune representative
  • Report product/project status, team performance metrics, and capacity utilization to senior leadership
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for global stakeholders seeking mechanical engineering support from GEC Pune
  • Initiate Requests for Information (RFI) when additional clarification is needed from global teams or customers
  • Support suppliers with additional information during bidding phases and provide technical evaluation of offers

Cross-functional Collaboration

  • Drive proactive collaboration with electrical engineering, fire protection, controls, and other disciplines during product development and project execution
  • Collaborate with production and manufacturing teams to ensure design-for-manufacturability
  • Cooperate with site managers during installation, providing technical solutions to raised issues
  • Collaborate with quality control during component/system inspections and on-site assembly
  • Support commissioning engineers in preparing test documentation
  • Coordinate with global engineering centres for knowledge sharing, standardization, and best practice alignment

Process Improvement & Innovation

  • Establish and drive continuous improvement programs for design processes, tools, and deliverable quality
  • Implement knowledge management systems for lessons learned, design libraries, and reusable components
  • Introduce automation and digital engineering practices to improve team productivity and reduce design cycle time
  • Champion innovation initiatives including new materials, manufacturing techniques, and design methodologies
  • Benchmark GEC Pune performance against global engineering centres and drive improvements
  • Define and track engineering KPIs: on-time delivery, quality metrics, productivity, and utilization

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (Design or Thermal Engineering preferred) Master's degree is a plus
  • 14+ years of progressive experience in mechanical/structural design engineering, with minimum 4+ years in a team leadership or management role.
  • Excellent knowledge of English
  • Software: AutoCAD, MS Office, knowledge of Revit, Inventor, optional 3D modeling software (SolidWorks, CREO, or CATIA) preferred. PLM/PDM system knowledge.
