We are looking for an Engineering Manager to join our API Traffic Management team, Tech Standardization within our Internal Platform subdivision.

Our vision is to maximize network effect through secure, resilient and high-performance API traffic management, enabling seamless API integrations across our platform and ecosystem while advancing value-based care.

The API Traffic Management team is responsible for building and operating the foundational API Gateway and Service Mesh platforms that power all northsouth and eastwest traffic across our cloud-native architecture. These platforms are critical to enabling scalable integrations, consistent security controls and reliable service-to-service communication across the enterprise.

We empower internal product teams, partners and external consumers with highly available, observable and policy-driven traffic infrastructure, ensuring that APIs and services can evolve independently while maintaining safety, performance and reliability.

In this role, you will lead high-performing engineers responsible for the API Gateway and Service Mesh roadmap, including availability, scalability, security and operational excellence. You are a hands-on technical leader with a passion for distributed systems, cloud infrastructure and developer experience. Your work will directly enable our mission of becoming the backbone of healthcareso clinicians can focus on patient care while the platform just works.

Job Responsibilities

  • People Management & Development

Lead, mentor, coach and support the career growth of engineers through regular 1:1s, performance reviews, feedback and individualized development plans.

  • Hiring & Team Building Recruit, interview and onboard top-tier platform and infrastructure engineers to scale and strengthen the API Traffic Management team.
  • Platform Roadmap Ownership Own and evolve the roadmap for API traffic management capabilities, including API Gateway, service mesh, ingress/egress, routing, resiliency, security and observability.
  • High Availability & Reliability Ensure the API Gateway and service mesh platforms meet stringent availability,

latency and resiliency requirements, including multi-AZ/multi-region strategies, disaster recovery and incident response readiness.

  • Technical Leadership & Architecture Provide strong guidance on traffic patterns, API lifecycle management, service-to-service communication, rate limiting, authentication/authorization and zero-trust networking. Work with Architects to ensure designs are scalable, secure and aligned with enterprise standards.
  • Execution & Delivery Drive execution, remove blockers, manage dependencies and ensure timely delivery of high-quality platform capabilities used by internal services and external consumers.
  • Operational Excellence Champion best practices in reliability engineering, observability, on-call health, incident management and post-incident learning to continuously improve platform stability.
  • Process Optimization Continuously improve engineering workflows, release processes and Agile practices to balance speed, safety and platform reliability.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration Partner closely with product, security, cloud infrastructure, developer enablement and application teams to align traffic management capabilities with business and platform needs.
  • Developer Experience & Adoption Advocate for a strong internal developer experience by providing paved roads, clear abstractions, documentation and self-service capabilities for API and service mesh consumers.
  • Strategic Input & Innovation Contribute to broader platform and cloud strategy, evaluate emerging technologies and guide experimentation in areas such as advanced routing, policy engines and service identity.

Typical Qualifications

  • 12+ Years of Software Engineering Experience Strong background in building and operating distributed systems, platforms or infrastructure at scale.
  • 3+ Years of People Management Experience Proven ability to lead, mentor, and grow high-performing engineering teams.
  • Deep Technical Expertise in Platform & Networking Domains Strong understanding of API Gateways, Service Mesh technologies, L7/L4 networking concepts, traffic routing, load balancing and service-to-service communication in cloud-native environments.
  • Experience with Cloud & Kubernetes Ecosystems Hands-on experience with Kubernetes-based platforms and cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred), including ingress, egress and service networking patterns.
  • Reliability & Availability Mindset Demonstrated experience designing and operating highly available, resilient systems, with familiarity in SRE practices, SLIs/SLOs, incident management and operational maturity.
  • Agile Delivery Expertise Proficiency in Agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban) and experience applying them to platform teams.
  • Excellent Communication & Stakeholder Management Ability to clearly communicate technical concepts, influence across teams and align stakeholders on priorities and trade-offs.
  • Hiring & Team Scaling Experience Proven track record of attracting, hiring and retaining top engineering talent and fostering an inclusive, high-trust team culture.
  • Problem Solving & Strategic Leadership Ability to navigate complex technical and organizational challenges, make sound decisions and align team outcomes with business objectives.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or Related Field Or equivalent practical experience in software or platform engineering.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with API Gateway platforms such as Apigee, Kong, NGINX, AWS API Gateway or similar
  • Hands-on exposure to Service Mesh technologies like Istio, Linkerd, Consul or Envoy
  • Experience operating large-scale Kubernetes platforms in production environments
  • Familiarity with zero-trust networking, mTLS, identity-based routing and policy enforcement
  • Knowledge of observability stacks (Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, OpenSearch, etc.)
  • Experience with traffic shaping, rate limiting, circuit breaking and resiliency patterns
  • Background in developer platform or internal PaaS teams
  • Exposure to healthcare, regulated environments or high-compliance systems
  • Experience leading or collaborating with SRE or infrastructure teams
