Role Overview
We are seeking a
Lead Data Scientist (Analytics) to lead analytics for
Category, Markets, Programming, and Operations within
eBay Live, eBay's real-time livestream commerce platform.
eBay Live is a fast-growing business that operates across
Collectibles, Luxury, Sneakers, and Apparel, with dynamic programming, category strategy, and operational execution. As the platform scales, this role will play a critical part in
shaping analytics direction, influencing cross-functional decisions, and building repeatable analytical frameworks.
This is a
senior individual contributor role with
mentorship and thought-leadership responsibilities. You will own complex analytical problem spaces end to end, act as a strategic partner to category and ops leaders, and help raise the analytics bar across the eBay Live organization.
This role is ideal for an experienced analytics IC who enjoys deep ownership, collaborator influence, and operating in ambiguity, without formal people management.
Key Responsibilities
Area Ownership & Thought Leadership (Core Focus)
- Own analytics for one or more strategic areas within Category, Markets, Programming & Ops for eBay Live
- Act as the analytics encouraging leader for your domain, crafting how data informs strategy and execution
- Proactively find opportunities, risks, and unanswered questions, not just respond to requests
- Define analytical frameworks that become reusable standards across the team
Category & Marketplace Analytics
- Lead deep-dive analyses on category performance, supply health, and marketplace dynamics
- Analyze GMV, sell-through, pricing, and auction outcomes across categories and markets
- Partner with category leaders to influence prioritization, assortment strategy, and investment decisions
Markets & Expansion Analytics
- Lead analytics supporting market and geo expansion decisions
- Evaluate performance across regions and identify drivers of success or underperformance
- Define metrics and success criteria for launching and scaling eBay Live in new markets
- Provide clear recommendations on sequencing, resourcing, and scale-up strategies
Programming & Event Performance Analytics
- Own analytics for live event and show performance
- Develop frameworks to evaluate programming formats, schedules, hosts, and category mix
- Partner with programming and ops teams to optimize live content and execution
- Build repeatable performance diagnostics to guide programming decisions
Operational Analytics & Decision Support
- Serve as a strategic analytics partner to Live operations teams
- Identify operational bottlenecks, risks, and efficiency opportunities using data
- Balance real-time decision support with deeper analytical investigations
- Build dashboards and tools that enable ops teams to self-serve insights
Stakeholder Management & Influence
- Partner closely with senior stakeholders across category, ops, product, and leadership teams
- Drive alignment on metrics, success criteria, and analytical approaches
- Influence decisions through clear, data-backed narratives and recommendations
- Navigate ambiguity and competing priorities with confidence and judgment
Mentorship & Analytics Excellence
- Mentor junior analysts and data scientists through technical guidance and analytical reviews
- Raise the bar on analytical rigor, clarity, and business relevance across the team
- Contribute to shared analytics best practices and standards within eBay Live
- Informally support onboarding and development of newer team members
Technical Excellence
- Write high-quality, scalable Python and SQL code
- Design analyses that are robust, interpretable, and reproducible
- Review complex queries, dashboards, and analyses to ensure quality
- Partner with engineering to influence data models and pipelines when needed
Required Qualifications
- 711 years of experience in analytics, data science, or business analytics roles
- Strong proficiency in Python and SQL, with a track record of owning complex analyses
- Experience in marketplace, category, or business analytics
- Strong ability to operate independently and drive work end to end
- Proven experience influencing senior stakeholders without formal authority
- Excellent problem-framing, prioritization, and communication skills
- Experience building dashboards using Tableau or similar tools
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with e-commerce, marketplaces, auctions, or live/real-time platforms
- Familiarity with modern data stack tools (e.g., Snowflake, Airflow, dbt)
- Exposure to category management, operations, or supply-demand analytics
- Experience working in early-stage or fast-scaling products
- Interest in applying AI or automation to analytics workflows
