Role Description This is a full-time, remote role for a Live Underwriter - US Mortgage. The Live Underwriter evaluates residential mortgage applications in real time, reviewing credit, income, assets, collateral, and supporting documentation to determine eligibility based on investor, insurer, and internal guidelines. Responsibilities include analyzing risk, validating data accuracy, clearing conditions, and issuing approvals, suspensions, or declines with clear, documented rationale. The role involves frequent interaction with loan officers, processors, and quality teams to resolve issues, request additional information, and ensure timely decisioning. The Live Underwriter is expected to maintain service-level agreements, uphold regulatory and compliance standards, and contribute to process improvements. The position requires consistent, professional communication, accurate judgment, and adherence to company policies and lending regulations.
Qualifications

  • Strong experience in the Mortgage Industry with a solid understanding of US mortgage products, regulations, and compliance standards.
  • Demonstrated expertise in Mortgage Underwriting and general Underwriting practices, including evaluating credit, income, assets, and collateral.
  • Hands-on experience working with Mortgages, loan files, and documentation platforms within retail, wholesale, or correspondent environments.
  • Robust Analytical Skills, including the ability to assess risk, interpret complex financial data, and make sound, timely decisions.
  • Familiarity with AUS tools (e.g., DU, LP) and common LOS systems; comfort working with digital and AI-enabled workflows.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain underwriting decisions clearly and professionally to internal partners.
  • High attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to manage a steady pipeline while meeting turnaround time goals.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment, demonstrating reliability, integrity, and consistent performance.
  • Prior experience in US mortgage underwriting (conventional; FHA/VA/USDA experience is a plus).
  • Relevant certification or training in mortgage lending or underwriting is preferred; associate or bachelor's degree in a related field is an advantage.
