How You'll Help Us Keep Climbing (Overview & Key Responsibilities)

At Delta Technology Hub, Virgin Atlantic team, we're looking for a Lead Web Developer to play a critical role in delivering world-class digital experiences across Virgin Atlantic's customer channels, including .com and mobile applications. You will lead the front-end engineering craft, setting high standards for coding, performance, security, and accessibility.

You will be hands-on with modern technologies including React, Next.js, and GraphQL, while collaborating closely with designers, product managers, back-end engineers, and external partners.

As a technical expert, you will advocate for the adoption of a scalable design system, promote headless CMS patterns (Adobe AEM/AEP), and uphold best practices across our platforms. You will also ensure operational excellence through L3 support, production triage, and proactive observability.

This role demands a proactive, curious mindset, keeping Virgin Atlantic at the forefront of digital innovation.

What You Need To Succeed (Minimum Qualifications)

  • 7+ years of front-end development experience in a commercial environment.
  • Expert proficiency in React, Next.js, TypeScript, and modern JavaScript.
  • Strong experience integrating with headless CMS systems (Adobe AEM preferred).
  • Solid understanding of GraphQL APIs and server-side rendering (SSR).
  • Deep knowledge of web performance, accessibility (WCAG standards), and security best practices.
  • Hands-on experience with design systems and component libraries (e.g., Storybook, Figma integration).
  • Proficiency in HTML5, CSS3 (SASS/LESS), and responsive design.
  • Practical experience working with Azure and AWS-hosted applications.
  • Strong experience with source control (Git), CI/CD pipelines, and agile delivery methods.
  • Mentor junior developers

  • Front-End Engineering Leadership
    • Develop, optimise, and maintain high-quality, customer-facing web experiences.
    • Champion best practices around security, accessibility, SEO, and responsive design.
    • Drive the adoption of the Virgin Atlantic design system and reusable component patterns.
  • Technical Excellence and Innovation
    • Stay current on emerging technologies and advocate for continuous front-end innovation.
    • Implement modern front-end architectures leveraging SSR, SSG, and client-side rendering where appropriate.
    • Integrate front-end applications with GraphQL and RESTful APIs.
    • Operational Excellence and L3 Support
      • Provide technical expertise during triage and incident management.
      • Support production deployments and maintain operational resilience.
      • Embed observability and telemetry best practices within the front-end codebase.
    • Collaboration and Delivery
      • Work closely with UX/UI, Product, and Platform teams to deliver optimal customer experiences.
      • Contribute to sprint planning, backlog refinement, and technical estimation.
      • Promote a DevOps mindset across engineering squads.
    • Continuous Improvement
      • Lead code reviews and pair programming to uplift engineering quality.
      • Recommend and implement continuous improvements to workflows, tooling, and processes.
      • Help foster a culture of ownership, continuous learning, and high performance within the web development community.
