The Role: Lead Software Engineer

We are looking for a hands-on Lead Software Engineer to be the technical anchor of our engineering team. Reporting directly to the CPTO, you will architect our core systems, write mission-critical code, and establish an engineering culture that we can truly be proud of.

You will lead the technical execution across our product verticals: Intelligence, Service & Demand. This role is perfect for a senior technical leader who loves staying close to the code, thrives in a high-ownership environment, and wants to mentor a growing team of engineers while building the foundation for 10x scale.

The Challenges You'll Solve
Challenge 1: Scale 10x Through Technical Leverage

The Problem: We sold 100 homes in the past year. To reach our Series A milestones, we need to enable 1,000+ homes sold annually without linearly scaling our engineering headcount.

Your Job:

• Architect scalable, fault-tolerant systems that handle a 10x load seamlessly.
• Identify and eliminate engineering bottlenecks and technical debt before they slow us down.
• Create leverage through automation, robust internal tools, and solid infrastructure.

Challenge 2: Shift from 70/30 Service/Product to 30/70

The Problem: Today, Propsoch is heavily reliant on human-powered service. To scale, we need technology to deliver the bulk of the value while maintaining supreme trust and quality.

Your Job:

• Build AI-powered tools that augment our real estate advisors and reduce manual workflows.
• Partner with Product and Operations to design hybrid service+product experiences.
• Balance rapid speed-to-market with uncompromised technical quality and maintainability.

Challenge 3: Establish a Championship Engineering Culture

The Problem: We are a lean team of 7 engineers scaling rapidly. We need a technical leader on the ground who sets the standard for how engineering is done at Propsoch.

Your Job:

• Instill a culture of extreme ownership, intellectual honesty, and high-quality execution.
• Mentor junior and mid-level engineers through rigorous code reviews, pair programming, and architectural deep-dives.
• Help interview and assess technical candidates to ensure we maintain a world-class hiring bar.

What You'll Own

1. Hands-On Technical Contributions & Architecture

• Write Code: Architect core systems, build critical features, and debug complex production issues.
• Platform Strategy: Define technical patterns for the next 12-18 months. Make the tough build vs. buy decisions.
• Standards: Establish strict standards for code quality, testing, security, and documentation.

2. Engineering Delivery & Velocity

• Process: Streamline sprint planning, CI/CD pipelines, and deployment automation.
• Quality: Ship fast without accumulating crushing technical debt. Keep P0/P1 bugs to a near-zero minimum.

3. Mentorship & Culture Building

• Lead by Example: Demonstrate what technical excellence looks like every single day.
• Elevate the Team: Provide constructive, actionable feedback. Make the engineers around you noticeably better.
• Psychological Safety: Foster an environment where engineers feel safe proposing bold ideas and learning from failures.

4. Cross-Functional Collaboration

• Partnership: Work seamlessly with Product and Design to ensure feasibility and smooth delivery.
• Communication: Translate complex technical tradeoffs into clear business realities for founders and stakeholders.

What It Takes to Be Successful

Must-Haves:

• Experience: 7–8 years of software engineering experience, with a track record of acting as a technical lead or senior IC at a startup/scale-up (0→1 or 1→10 stage).
• Technical Depth: Exceptional hands-on coding skills in modern web architectures (React/Next.js, Node.js/Python, AWS, PostgreSQL).
• Systems Thinking: Deep experience architecting systems for scale, performance, and reliability.
• Mentorship: Proven ability to elevate the output of a team, run high-quality code reviews, and onboard new engineers.
• Product Mindset: You don't just build what you're told; you understand the customer and the business goals behind the code.
• Bias for Action: You prefer shipping and iterating over endless planning.

Nice-to-Haves:

• Hands-on experience building AI/ML systems (LLMs, data pipelines, model deployment).
• Experience in proptech, fintech, or high-consideration consumer products.
• Contributions to open source or technical thought leadership.
