What's the role
As a
Lead Software Engineer (Scala, Java, AWS, REST Services) you will design, build, and operate backend services that power HERE's state‑of‑the‑art mapping technologies. You will be part of an agile pod team focused on developing scalable, automated geo‑spatial processing, enrichment, and transformation platforms that ensure the freshness, accuracy, and relevance of HERE map content. You will contribute across the full software development lifecycle - from shaping product vision and translating requirements into technical designs, to implementation, testing, release, and ongoing support. Working closely with cross‑functional partners, you will help deliver reliable, high‑quality solutions that meet evolving business and product needs. In this role, you will take end‑to‑end ownership of the software you build, applying and extending CI/CD and DevOps practices to ensure operational excellence. You will collaborate with Lead and Principal Engineers on architecture, design, and code reviews, provide technical guidance for specific software modules, and mentor engineers within the team. You will also explore and prototype new technologies, tools, and open‑source APIs through proofs of concept, helping HERE continuously improve how map data is processed, tracked, and analyzed through backend services and supporting dashboards
Who are you
You bring strong backend engineering expertise with a problem‑solving mindset and a sense of ownership.
- You have a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field, along with 7+ years of professional software development experience.
- You are proficient in Java and Scala and are motivated to continuously deepen your technical skills.
- You have hands‑on experience working with AWS services such as SQS, SNS, EMR, and serverless architectures, and you are comfortable building event‑driven systems and RESTful web services using JSON and XML.
- You have experience working with relational databases and SQL, preferably PostgreSQL and/or Oracle, and are familiar with modern CI/CD and collaboration tools such as Git/Gerrit, JIRA, and internal documentation platforms.
- You communicate clearly, collaborate effectively in global team environments, and enjoy mentoring engineers by sharing knowledge and best practices.
- You are curious, adaptable, and open to evaluating and building proofs of concept using new technologies and open‑source APIs to solve business problems.
