Practice by Numbers is a leading dental practice management SaaS platform serving over

1,500 dental practices across North America. We provide comprehensive solutions including

practice management software, VOIP services, payment processing, and analytics to help

dental practices optimize their operations and grow their businesses.

We're now embarking on an exciting strategic expansion into AI-powered automation, building

conversational AI solutions that will transform how dental practices interact with their patients.

About the Role:

We're seeking an AI Software Development Lead to spearhead the technical development of

our AI-powered products, starting with our conversational AI chatbot for dental practices. This is

a high-impact leadership role where you'll architect and build voice and chat-based AI systems

that will automate patient interactions for hundreds of dental practices.

You'll work on greenfield AI products that combine cutting-edge LLM technology with real-world

healthcare applications, handling thousands of conversations daily while maintaining HIPAA

compliance and delivering exceptional user experiences. As the chatbot product stabilizes, you'll

take technical leadership of additional AI initiatives across the PBN platform.

This role reports to the Engineering India Head

Location: Kolkata/ Gurugram, India

What You'll Do:

AI Tech Leadership:

Lead the technical development of our conversational AI chatbot from current phase

through production scale

Take ownership of additional AI products and initiatives as they emerge in the PBN

roadmap

Define technical strategy and architecture for AI-powered features across the platform

Drive innovation in AI applications for healthcare and practice management

Architecture & Technical Excellence:

Design and implement scalable AI conversation systems handling voice and chat across

multiple channels

Architect LLM integration strategies balancing response quality, latency, and cost

optimization

Build robust conversation orchestration using frameworks like LangChain or custom

solutions

Ensure system reliability, observability, and performance monitoring at scale

Conversation Design & LLM Engineering:

Design multi-turn conversation flows with state management and context retention

Implement prompt engineering strategies for various business use cases

Fine-tune LLM behavior for healthcare-specific applications

Build guardrails and safety mechanisms for patient-facing interactions

Integration & Data Management:

Integrate with practice management systems (Dentrix, Open Dental, Eaglesoft) for

real-time data synchronization

Implement secure authentication systems including multi-factor verification

Build RESTful APIs for dashboards and system integrations

Ensure HIPAA compliance across all data handling and storage

Team Leadership & Collaboration:

Provide technical mentorship to junior developers and conduct code reviews

Work closely with Product Management to translate requirements into technical

specifications

Participate in sprint planning, daily standups, and product reviews

Contribute to technical documentation and drive engineering best practices

Collaborate effectively across time zones with US-based stakeholders

Required Qualifications:

Experience:

7+ years of software development experience with demonstrated progression of

responsibility

2+ years of hands-on experience building and deploying AI/ML systems in production

Proven track record of shipping products that reached market and scaled to significant

user bases (not just prototypes or demos)

Experience with LLM-based applications (GPT-4, Claude, or similar) in production

environments

Background in building real-time systems or conversational AI (chatbots, voice

assistants, or similar)

Experience leading technical initiatives or mentoring development teams

Technical Skills:

Strong proficiency in Python - our primary development language for AI systems

LLM frameworks: LangChain, LlamaIndex, or similar orchestration frameworks

API development: RESTful services, webhooks, and third-party integrations

Cloud platforms: AWS, GCP, or Azure with services like Lambda, S3, RDS

Databases: PostgreSQL, MongoDB, or similar for conversation state management

Voice processing: Experience with STT/TTS APIs (Deepgram, ElevenLabs,

AssemblyAI) or similar

Understanding of async programming, event-driven architectures, and real-time

systems

AI/ML Knowledge:

Deep understanding of LLM capabilities and limitations

Practical experience with prompt engineering, Agentic Architecture and

conversation design

Knowledge of RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) patterns

Familiarity with model evaluation, testing, and monitoring

Understanding of cost optimization for LLM-based systems

Leadership & Soft Skills:

Demonstrated ability to lead technical projects from conception to production

Strong problem-solving and analytical thinking with ability to handle ambiguity

Excellent communication skills for technical and non-technical stakeholders

Ability to work independently and drive projects to completion

Comfortable with fast-paced startup environment and evolving requirements

Experience collaborating across time zones (US-India collaboration preferred)

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience building voice AI systems or telephony integrations (Twilio, Vonage)

Knowledge of healthcare/HIPAA compliance requirements

Background in NLP or speech recognition technologies

Familiarity with monitoring and observability tools (Datadog, New Relic, Sentry)

Previous experience in SaaS or B2B product companies

Contributions to open-source AI projects or active presence in AI community

Experience with multi-tenant architecture and enterprise integrations

Track record of technical leadership in scaling products from early stage to growth

Preferred Educational Background:

Bachelor's/Master's degree from IITs/IIMs or equivalent top rated institutions

Proper certifications on the subject
