Join athenahealth as a Lead Member of Technical Staff - Manager based in Chennai, India, in a hybrid work environment. Essential Job Responsibilities
- Design & Development: Architect, develop, and deploy high-quality, enterprise-grade code to production. Lead complex feature development and deliver timely fixes to ensure system reliability and customer value.
- Technical Design: Produce accurate, unambiguous technical design specifications with appropriate detail. Critique and refine technical documentation as needed.
- Technical Leadership & Architecture: Provide technical guidance and mentorship to team members. Lead design discussions, drive architectural decisions, and evaluate new technologies to ensure scalable, sustainable solutions aligned with organizational standards.
- Code Quality & Testing: Deliver high-quality software components and services in adherence with RPR policies on security, performance, longevity, and integration testing. Write comprehensive unit tests and continuously monitor code quality. Perform peer code reviews to uphold quality standards.
- Cloud & Scalability: Scale systems to meet business demand and deploy solutions to meet high availability and disaster recovery (HA/DR) targets, ensuring performance at scale.
- Integration & Interoperability: Ensure high quality and optimum performance of integration systems by proactively identifying issues and proposing alternative solutions. Support FHIR-based exchange and interoperability across health information networks.
- Estimation & Planning: Accurately estimate development tasks in story points and provide high-level T-shirt sizing for software components and services. Challenge estimates during planning to ensure accuracy.
- Referral Domain Expertise: Develop deep domain knowledge of referral workflows, including referral order exchange, status tracking, and closed-loop referral management.
- AI Adoption & Effective Usage: Leverage AI tools such as Windsurf and METIS to enhance development workflows, improve code quality, and drive productivity gains across the team.
- Standards & Best Practices: Understand and follow coding conventions, architectural approaches, and best practices. Hold team members accountable for adherence to established standards.
- Definition of Done: Adhere to the team's Definition of Done as part of each sprint, including unit tests, functional testing, code reviews, regression prevention, bug fixes, and documentation.
- Ownership & Collaboration: Take ownership of what you build and coordinate efforts across teams to ensure proper completion and seamless care coordination.
- Hiring & Team Building: Participate in the team member interview process as needed and influence final hiring decisions.
- Agile Participation: Actively participate in Agile ceremonies including daily stand-ups, sprint planning, readouts, and retrospectives.

- Participate in architectural reviews and contribute to the evolution of the technology roadmap.
- Support recruitment efforts by evaluating technical candidates and providing input on hiring decisions.
- Engage with stakeholders to communicate project status, risks, and mitigation plans.
- Promote knowledge sharing through documentation, code reviews, and technical presentations.
- Assist in defining and enforcing security best practices within the development lifecycle.
- Contribute to community and industry forums to stay current with emerging technologies and trends.
- Facilitate collaboration across distributed teams to ensure alignment and effective delivery.
Expected Education & Experience
- 812 years of professional experience in a software engineering role.
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- Hands-on experience working in an Agile development environment.
- Strong software engineering skills across the full SDLC, with a focus on high-quality, DevSecOps-driven, enterprise-scale software delivery.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Java, Spring Boot, and Perl, with the ability to quickly learn and apply scripting languages such as Python.
- Hands-on experience in architecting and developing cloud-based solutions using AWS and EKS.
- Solid understanding of object-oriented programming, relational database technologies (e.g., PostgreSQL, Oracle, MySQL), distributed computing, and RESTful APIs.
- Working knowledge of version control tools such as Perforce and Git.
- Demonstrated experience in leading or developing high-quality, enterprise-scale software products using a structured SDLC approach.
- Hands-on experience leveraging AI tools like Windsurf and METIS to enhance development workflows and automation.
- Experience in healthcare technology or health information exchange is preferred.
- Demonstrated experience mentoring junior engineers and leading technical initiatives.
