Lead IBM watsonx Agentic AI Engineer

About the Role

We are looking for a Lead IBM watsonx Agentic AI Engineer to design, build, and deploy enterprise-grade AI agents and intelligent workflows using IBM watsonx and watsonx Orchestrate.

You will be responsible for the agentic AI and orchestration layer of a large-scale enterprise AI platform, working on complex business processes that involve multiple data sources, enterprise applications, documents, policies, workflows, and human approvals.

This is a highly hands-on role for an engineer who can move from solution architecture to actual implementation, building production-ready agents, tools, workflows, integrations, knowledge capabilities, evaluation frameworks, and secure execution patterns.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and develop production-grade AI agents using IBM watsonx / watsonx Orchestrate.
• Build single-agent and multi-agent systems for complex enterprise workflows.
• Design agent orchestration, task delegation, tool calling, context management, handoffs, and execution flows.
• Build reusable skills, tools, APIs, and agent capabilities that can be leveraged across multiple use cases.
• Develop complex workflows including sequential, conditional, parallel, and human-in-the-loop processes.
• Integrate AI agents with enterprise systems through REST APIs, OpenAPI, Python services, SDKs, and MCP.
• Develop custom Python-based tools and business logic for agent execution.
• Build enterprise RAG and knowledge-retrieval capabilities across structured and unstructured data.
• Integrate documents, policies, knowledge repositories, databases, APIs, and enterprise applications into governed AI workflows.
• Design secure abstraction layers between AI agents and enterprise systems.
• Implement structured outputs and APIs for integration with enterprise applications and user-facing interfaces.
• Build agent evaluation and testing frameworks covering accuracy, grounding, tool selection, workflow completion, reliability, latency, and cost.
• Implement observability, logging, monitoring, tracing, and regression testing for AI agents.
• Implement RBAC, IAM, authentication, authorization, secrets management, auditability, and governance for agentic systems.
• Establish development, testing, UAT, and production deployment practices for AI agents and workflows.
• Work closely with solution architects, backend engineers, data engineers, product teams, and enterprise stakeholders to translate business requirements into scalable agentic solutions.
• Create technical documentation, architecture standards, reusable patterns, and best practices for enterprise AI development.

Ideal Candidate

We are looking for someone who has built and deployed real AI agents in production, not someone whose experience is limited to prompt engineering or basic chatbot development.

The ideal candidate can independently take a requirement from:

Business Process → Agent Architecture → Workflow → Tools & Integrations → Knowledge → Evaluation → Security → Production Deployment and turn it into a robust, scalable enterprise AI solution.

You should be comfortable operating at both architecture and implementation levels, while establishing reusable capabilities that allow future AI use cases to be developed faster.

Experience

• 3–5 years of overall software/engineering experience preferred.
• 3+ years of experience in AI, automation, or enterprise AI.
• 2+ years of hands-on IBM watsonx / watsonx Orchestrate experience preferred.
• Proven experience delivering AI agents or agentic workflows into production.
• Strong enterprise integration and backend engineering experience.
