Position description:

This position will report to the Director of Lab Operations within the Systems Engineering department and will be primarily responsible for the maintenance and day-to-day function of a highly active R&D laboratory environment. The main objective of this position will be ensuring operation and preparation of mission critical equipment, capacity, and supply to promote robust medical device design development and evaluations.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain laboratory equipment by scheduling regular maintenance, interfacing with facilities, service technicians and responding to equipment issues.
  • Establish and enforce lab safety and housekeeping practices by reviewing best practices, interfacing with engineers to determine special needs.
  • Establish, implement, and enforce laboratory processes and safety procedures.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies and tools, placing and expediting purchase orders for supplies.
  • Work with QA to manage calibration schedules and tool files for all lab equipment by creating tool files for new equipment, scheduling calibrations, maintaining proper equipment labeling,
  • reviewing and updating tool files.
  • Provide training, guidance and assistance to all applicable personnel on use of lab equipment.
  • Independently perform routine and advanced technician tasks deploying standard and advanced techniques.
  • Independently lead laboratory projects or initiatives of moderate complexity.
  • Assist and mentor other technicians with product testing and evaluations as needed.
  • Completes troubleshooting of technical issues through application of basic principles, theories, and concepts.
  • Maintain chemical storage and MSDS's on all chemicals in lab.
  • Manage licenses on all lab specific software tools.
  • Manage storage and disposal of hazardous wastes.
  • Interface with IT to ensure proper lab computer systems and network capabilities.

Required Skills:

Technical and Operational:

  • Experience supporting laboratory or engineering environments
  • Strong troubleshooting and equipment maintenance capabilities
  • Knowledge of inventory management and procurement processes
  • Familiarity with lab safety practices and compliance requirements
  • Understanding of calibration, documentation, and regulated environments

Leadership and Management:

  • Experience leading or mentoring technical teams
  • Ability to coach, develop, and manage performance
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to balance hands-on work with leadership responsibilities

Communication and Collaboration:

  • Clear written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to create user-friendly documentation and training materials
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration with Engineering, QA, IT, and Operations
  • Ability to manage stakeholder expectations and resolve conflicts

Analytical and Process Improvement:

  • Attention to detail in record keeping and documentation
  • Ability to analyze workflows and identify improvement opportunities
  • Data-driven decision making and prioritization

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or technical field or equivalent experience
  • Experience in a regulated environment such as Medical Device or similar industry
  • Familiarity with ISO 13485 and ISO 17025 standards
  • Familiarity with advanced lab equipment
  • Knowledge of mobile platforms, lab systems, or engineering tools
  • Experience implementing process improvements or operational metrics tracking

  • Strong collaboration across Engineering, Quality, IT, and Facilities

Education and Experience:

  • 8–12 years of experience
  • 8+ years in laboratory environments or higher-level education combination
  • 7+ years in development labs, preferably R&D
  • 3+ years in laboratory equipment oversight
  • Experience with GDP documentation and logging practices
  • Microsoft Office and technical writing capabilities
