Role
We are looking for a seasoned Senior Cognos Developer to join Kanerika's Product Development team as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for IBM Cognos.
You will be an integral, in-office member of our Cognos-to-Power BI migration team, serving as the definitive Cognos authority guiding the team on source system interpretation, complex business logic translation, and migration decision-making.
Your deep Cognos expertise will directly shape the quality and velocity of our migration deliverables, while your growing familiarity with Power BI will help bridge both platforms seamlessly.
Key Responsibilities
Cognos SME Source System Authority :
- Serve as the primary Cognos SME for the migration team the go-to expert for all Cognos-related queries, decisions, and escalations.
- Conduct deep-dive assessments of IBM Cognos environments Framework Manager packages, data modules, cubes, namespaces, and report types.
- Decode and document complex Cognos business logic, multi-fact Stitch Queries, and report-level calculations for the Power BI team.
- Analyse Cognos security models (folder-level, package-level, row-level) and define equivalent Power BI RLS and Entra ID mappings.
- Inventory and classify all Cognos assets reports, dashboards, data sources, schedules, and bursting configurations.
Migration Collaboration & Translation
- Work side-by-side with Power BI developers in the same team to ensure accurate translation of Cognos logic into DAX and Power Query.
- Review and validate Power BI reports built by the team against Cognos source counterparts for functional and data parity.
- Guide the team in rebuilding OLAP / cube-based logic into star schema models and DAX time-intelligence patterns.
- Identify migration risks, data gaps, and edge cases early and propose solutions to keep delivery on track.
- Support reconciliation and UAT activities comparing Cognos and Power BI outputs to sign off on migration accuracy.
Governance, Standards & Documentation
- Define and maintain Cognos-to-Power BI mapping specifications, data lineage documents, and migration runbooks.
- Establish source-side governance standards and ensure they are faithfully represented in the Power BI target environment.
- Maintain a Cognos knowledge base for the team covering quirks, known issues, and best-practice workarounds.
- Collaborate with data engineering and database teams on source connectivity SQL Server, Oracle, DB2, SAP, flat files.
Team Enablement & Continuous Improvement
- Upskill Power BI developers on Cognos concepts report types, Framework Manager layers, query subjects, and prompts.
- Contribute to improving Kanerika's migration accelerator (FLIP) by flagging patterns that can be automated.
- Participate in sprint planning, effort estimation, and daily stand-ups as an active member of the migration team.
- Mentor junior/mid-level Cognos resources and review their work for quality and consistency.
Required Skills & Qualifications
Primary Skill : IBM Cognos (Mandatory) :
- 6 to 8 years of hands-on IBM Cognos development experience this is a non-negotiable requirement.
- Deep expertise in Cognos Analytics (11.x) and legacy Cognos BI (10.x).
- Expert-level proficiency in Framework Manager physical, logical, and presentation layers, relationships, governors, and query subjects.
- Strong command of Report Studio : list, crosstab, chart, map, master-detail, and active reports.
- Thorough experience with Query Studio, Analysis Studio, and Cognos Workspace / Dashboard.
- In-depth knowledge of Cognos security namespace authentication, folder-level and object-level permissions.
- Working knowledge of Cognos scheduling, bursting, drill-through definitions, and distribution lists.
- Ability to interpret, trace, and optimise the underlying SQL generated by Cognos report queries.
- Familiarity with Cognos TM1 / Planning Analytics is an added advantage.
Secondary Skill : Power BI (Required) :
- Hands-on experience building Power BI reports, dashboards, and paginated reports.
- Working knowledge of DAX calculated measures, KPIs, time intelligence, and filter context.
- Familiarity with Power Query (M language) for data ingestion and transformation.
- Understanding of Power BI data models star schema design, relationships, and cardinality.
- Awareness of Power BI Service workspaces, apps, Row-Level Security, and deployment pipelines.
- Exposure to Microsoft Fabric / Power BI Premium is a strong advantage.
Secondary Skill : SQL (Required) :
- Strong SQL proficiency complex joins, subqueries, window functions, and query optimisation.
- Experience working across multiple databases SQL Server, Oracle, DB2, or Teradata.
- Ability to write and review SQL to validate data correctness between Cognos and Power BI outputs.
- Understanding of OLAP concepts cubes, dimensions, hierarchies, and measures.
- Familiarity with data warehouse design and dimensional modelling principles.
Soft Skills
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills able to break down complex legacy logic quickly.
- Strong communication able to translate Cognos technicalities for Power BI developers and stakeholders.
- Collaborative team player who thrives in a co-located, in-office environment.
- Self-driven, detail-oriented, and comfortable in a fast-paced migration delivery environment.
Education & Certifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
- IBM Cognos certifications (IBM Certified Developer Cognos Analytics) preferred.
- Microsoft PL-300 (Power BI Data Analyst) certification is a strong differentiator.
- Any Azure or Microsoft Fabric certification is an added advantage.
Nice To Have
- Prior experience in Cognos-to-Power BI or similar BI migration projects.
- Familiarity with migration accelerator tools or metadata-driven migration approaches.
- Exposure to Agile project delivery and tools suchs as Azure DevOps or Jira.
- Knowledge of Python or R for data preparation and analytics automation.
- Experience with Microsoft Purview for data governance.
