Purpose of the role

Design, build and maintain backend services and APIs that support web applications and internal

tools used by Loch and its clients.

Ensure backend systems are secure, scalable, reliable and maintainable.

Work closely with front-end developers, product owners and stakeholders to translate requirements into robust server-side solutions.

Responsibilities and duties

Design, develop and maintain backend services and RESTful APIs for web applications.

Implement and manage secure authentication and authorisation mechanisms including JWT,

OAuth and role-based access control.

Design and optimise relational database schemas, queries and migrations in systems such as

PostgreSQL or MySQL.

Implement business logic and workflow automation based on documented requirements.

Monitor and improve application performance, scalability and reliability.

Integrate third party APIs, SaaS tools and external services as required.

Write clean, modular, testable and well documented code following agreed standards.

Participate in technical design discussions and contribute to architecture decisions.

Troubleshoot, debug and resolve backend issues in production and non-production

environments.

Support deployment workflows including CI/CD, environment configuration and release

activities.

Key deliverables

Stable and well documented backend services that support agreed application features.

APIs delivered in line with specifications, including error handling and authentication

requirements.

Database structures and queries that meet performance and reliability expectations.

Defects and incidents resolved within agreed timeframes.

Technical documentation maintained for services, endpoints and key workflows.

Compliance and confidentiality

All development work must be performed using approved systems, repositories and

environments.

Source code, credentials, test data and configuration details must be handled in line with

internal security and confidentiality protocols.

Production and client data must not be copied to personal devices or unapproved tools.

Any exposure to client systems or information must be for authorised business purposes

only and logged in accordance with internal processes.

Frontend and web development team.

Product owners or business stakeholders.

IT infrastructure or DevOps support. External vendors and platform support teams where

required.

Essential skills

0-2 years of backend development experience.

Strong experience in at least one of Node.js (Express or NestJS), Python (Django or FastAPI),

Java (Spring Boot) or NET Core.

Proven experience building and consuming RESTful APIs.

Strong understanding of relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL.

Experience with authentication and role-based access control.

Knowledge of secure coding practices and common web security risks.

Experience with Git and standard version control workflows.

Familiarity with at least one cloud platform such as AWS, Azure or GCP.

Understanding of containerisation concepts, preferably Docker.

Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work through production issues.

Desirable skills

Experience building SaaS platforms or enterprise web applications.

Exposure to microservices architecture and related patterns.

Experience with caching systems such as Redis.

Experience configuring or working within CI/CD pipelines.

Basic understanding of frontend frameworks such as React, Angular or Vue.

Experience with message queues such as Kafka or RabbitMQ.

Qualifications and experience

Bachelor's degree in computer science, Engineering or a related field is preferred.

Proven track record of delivering production grade web applications and backend services.
