Role Overview

Our customer is seeking an experienced and passionate Japanese commercial lawyer for a 4-month contract with a potential extension to 12 months. The role will focus on high‑volume and complex commercial contracting, procurement support, and playbook‑driven legal delivery, working closely with senior client counsel and local Japanese counsel in Tokyo

This role will commence in June 2026 and be based in India, with 100 % remote working arrangement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Draft, review, and negotiate commercial and procurement contracts (MSAs, SOWs, vendor and services agreements).
  • Support procurement teams with contract risk assessment, liability allocation, and regulatory considerations.
  • Deliver playbook‑driven contract reviews, identifying non‑standard terms and applying escalation protocols.
  • Interface as needed with local counsel in Tokyo to address Japan‑specific legal and regulatory issues.
  • Operate within a managed services model, meeting agreed SLAs, turnaround times, and quality standards.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional stakeholders to ensure efficient contract execution and issue resolution.

What You'll Bring

  • A minimum of 3+ years of post-qualification experience in commercial and contracting
  • Strong experience in drafting, reviewing, and negotiating MSAs, SOWs, and vendor agreements. Proven ability to lead regulatory remediation or transformation programs
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in Japanese at a business‑fluent level, both written and spoken.
  • Familiarity with playbook‑driven contracting, templates, and tiered escalation models.
  • Prior exposure to Financial Services or Insurance environments would be preferred.
