Job Description
Role Overview:
The IT Support Engineer Marine Systems is responsible for managing and supporting the IT infrastructure on vessels and maritime sites, including networking, cybersecurity, email, antivirus, and mission-critical marine applications. The role includes both remote and onboard support, ensuring secure, compliant, and uninterrupted digital operations in a maritime environment. This position requires strong technical knowledge of marine networking, firewalls, email systems, and maritime applications such as fleet management, ECDIS charting, PMS, and shipboard ERP tools.
Key Responsibilities:
System & Network Support
Set up, monitor, and maintain marine IT networks (LAN/WAN/Wi-Fi) aboard vessels.
Configure and support routers, switches, VLANs, and VSAT/IP gateway firewalls.
Manage network security through policies, access controls, and intrusion prevention on platforms like Fortinet, Cisco ASA, or Peplink.
Monitor network performance and troubleshoot connectivity issues between ship and shore.
Email & Communication Systems
Manage email systems onboard (e.g., FleetBroadband email, GTMail, Navarino InfinityMail, or Office 365-based mailboxes).
Troubleshoot delivery issues, relay configurations, and spam filter settings.
Ensure secure and compliant handling of crew and business emails.
Security & Antivirus
Deploy and manage endpoint protection/antivirus solutions onboard
Run regular scans, monitor alerts, and ensure updates are applied on time.
Support compliance with maritime cybersecurity guidelines (IMO MSC.428(98), ISO/IEC 27001).
Marine Application Support
Install and provide support for ECDIS chart systems, voyage planning tools, PMS (Planned Maintenance Systems), and ship ERP platforms.
Assist bridge officers and engineers with updates, licensing, and functional issues.
Coordinate with OEMs and vendors for advanced application troubleshooting.
IT Operations
Handle user account management, password resets, and permission issues.
Support remote access tools, file-sharing configurations, backup systems, and printing setups.
Maintain hardware inventory and ensure availability of spares during drydock or port calls.
Requirements
Education:
Bachelor's Degree / Diploma in: Information Technology or Electronics & Telecommunication or Marine Engineering or related fields
Experience:
36 years of experience in IT support, preferably in marine, offshore, or shipboard environments.
CCNA/CCNP or equivalent
Skills:
Firewalls (Fortinet, Cisco, Peplink)
Marine network infrastructure
Email systems for maritime use
Antivirus and security compliance
Familiarity with ECDIS, PMS, and maritime ERP tools
Other Requirements:
Strong understanding of marine IT ecosystems
Excellent troubleshooting and analytical skills
Ability to work independently onboard vessels or offshore
Good communication skills with both technical and non-technical crew
Strong documentation habits and ticketing discipline
Ability to work in mission-critical, 24x7 environments under pressure
