Istio / Service Mesh (L1 & L2)

Job Summary:
We are looking for a highly skilled and experienced Istio / Service Mesh to design, implement, and manage service mesh infrastructure in large-scale microservices environments. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in Istio, Kubernetes, and cloud-native architecture, with a strong DevOps and networking background.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, implement, and manage Istio-based service mesh architecture.
- Define and enforce traffic policies, service discovery, security policies, and observability using Istio.
- Integrate Istio with Kubernetes, Ingress gateways, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Configure mTLS, traffic shifting, canary releases, retries, timeouts, and rate limiting.
- Manage and troubleshoot service-to-service communication across microservices.
- Monitor and optimize performance of the mesh using Prometheus, Grafana, Jaeger, or Kiali.
- Collaborate with DevOps, platform, and security teams to enforce zero-trust security and policy-based control.
- Write automation scripts using Helm, Terraform, or Ansible for mesh configurations.
Required Skills:
- 6+ years of overall experience in DevOps, Cloud, or Infrastructure roles.
- 3+ years of hands-on experience with Istio in production environments.
- Strong knowledge of Kubernetes, Containers (Docker), and Helm.
- Experience with networking concepts (DNS, load balancing, ingress/egress, service discovery).
- Familiarity with observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, Jaeger, Kiali).
- Experience integrating Istio with CI/CD pipelines.
- Solid scripting skills (Bash, Python, YAML).
- Familiar with GitOps tools like ArgoCD or Flux.
- Experience with public cloud platforms (AWS / Azure / GCP).
Good to Have:
- Knowledge of other service mesh technologies like Linkerd, Consul, or AWS App Mesh.
- Experience with API Gateway solutions like Kong, Ambassador, or NGINX.
- Exposure to Zero Trust Security, OPA (Open Policy Agent), and SPIFFE/SPIRE.
- Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) or Istio certification.
Soft Skills:
- Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Strong communication and collaboration across engineering teams.
- Ability to document architectural decisions and implementation guidelines.
