The role

The iSeries Technical Specialist & Team Manager is responsible for the end-to-end ownership of the IBM i (AS400/iSeries) platform, combining deep technical expertise with leadership, service management, and vendor governance.

You will lead a team of engineers while also acting as the technical authority for the platform, ensuring stability, security, performance, and ongoing modernisation. The role also includes managing third-party vendors and partners delivering operational and project services.

This is a hands-on leadership role, requiring a balance of strategic oversight and technical involvement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the technical authority for IBM i / iSeries platforms
  • Oversee system architecture, capacity planning, and lifecycle management
  • Ensure high availability, resilience, and disaster recovery capabilities
  • Drive platform modernisation, automation, and integration with cloud/hybrid environments
  • Maintain security, patching, and compliance aligned to enterprise standards
  • Support critical incident resolution and problem management
  • Ensure platform stability through proactive monitoring, maintenance, and optimisation
  • Support audits and regulatory requirements
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of iSeries engineers
  • Set objectives, manage performance, and support career progression
  • Foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and collaboration
  • Ensure appropriate resource planning and skill coverage across the team
  • Promote adoption of modern engineering practices and automation
  • Manage third-party suppliers for iSeries infrastructure and managed services
  • Own vendor performance, SLAs, KPIs, and contractual deliverables
  • Drive service improvements and cost optimisation across vendors
  • Act as escalation point for vendor-related incidents and issues
  • Support commercial discussions, renewals, and service reviews
  • Define and execute the roadmap for the iSeries platform

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Extensive experience managing IBM i (iSeries / AS400) environments
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • IBM i OS (OS/400, IBM i)
    • System administration, performance tuning, and capacity management
  • Proven experience in leading technical teams
  • Experience managing third-party vendors and service providers
  • Experience with high availability and disaster recovery solutions
  • Knowledge of security and compliance standards
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills

Desirable Skills

  • Experience integrating iSeries with cloud or distributed platforms
  • Familiarity with automation and scripting (e.g., CL, Python, Ansible)
  • Knowledge of DevOps practices and modern engineering approaches
  • Experience with infrastructure monitoring and observability tools
  • Financial and commercial awareness for vendor and cost management
