Industrial Product Designer

WATER is a Biophysical Intelligence research company. Our mission is to teach matter to respond to life: we study how the human body and the physical world respond to each other, and we build machines that sense a body, model its state, and respond in real time. CAMA, an adaptive bed, and FLOW, an adaptive chair, are the first surfaces this research runs on. The work spans three research directions: machine learning and mathematics, bio research, and materials and electronics. The long-range outcomes we care about are human longevity and human experience.

You own the design of real parts: surfaces, details, materials, and finishes. You'll work on concepts, CAD, physical prototypes, and CMF, and take your parts through to tooling.

In this role you will:

• Develop concepts through sketch, CAD and physical model, and take them into detail.
• Model surfaces and detail parts to a standard that can be released for tooling.
• Build physical prototypes constantly — print, foam, cardboard, whatever is fastest.
• Specify CMF and work with vendors on samples, textures and finishes.
• Work inside mechanical constraints, and negotiate them where the design demands it.
• Detail the parts nobody notices: fits, gaps, radii, parting lines, fasteners.
• Defend your choices in design review.

What We Hope You'll Bring

• Something you designed has been manufactured, at any volume.
• 2+ years in industrial or product design.
• Strong surfacing CAD — Rhino, Alias, Fusion or SolidWorks.
• Genuinely fast at physical prototyping.
• A portfolio that shows how you think, not only what you produced.
• Nice to have: appliance or consumer hardware experience, workshop and model-making skills, rendering.
