Job Description

Pace Robotics, incubated by SINE IIT Bombay and backed by Pidilite Ventures and IIMA Ventures, is transforming building construction with intelligent, multi-tasking robots. We've launched India's first multi-tasking construction robot in partnership with Sobha Ltd, the most renowned real estate developer across India and the Middle East and have secured pre-order interests from top-tier firms in the region. Our flagship product, Centa Painter, automates paint, putty, and sanding for building interiors. Now, we're scaling deployments to seize global leadership in construction robotics within 24 months along with development on new robots for additional use cases across construction finishes.

Role Overview

We are looking for a mechanically strong Industrial Designer who can balance form, function, engineering depth, and manufacturability. This role requires someone who thinks like a mechanical engineer while designing like an industrial designer ,someone who understands systems, assemblies, tolerance, production realities, and user interaction in demanding industrial environments. You will not just design parts. You will help define the mechanical and visual DNA of our robotics product line.

What You Will Do

  • Translate problem statements, customer insights, and engineering inputs into robust, manufacturable hardware solutions.
  • Convert ideas and concepts into well-defined 3D models and production-ready assemblies.
  • Develop solid models, sheet metal designs, and detailed engineering drawings in SolidWorks.
  • Apply GD&T principles with working knowledge of tolerance stack-up and its impact on assembly and performance.
  • Design with strong consideration for ergonomics, human factors, operator safety, and usability in real-world construction environments.
  • Apply DFM/DFA principles to optimize cost, scalability, and assembly efficiency.
  • Design for rugged, dust-heavy, vibration-prone industrial conditions.
  • Contribute to system-level hardware thinking — considering electronics integration, cable routing, thermal needs, structural integrity, and service access.
  • Define and evolve a cohesive product design language aligned with brand identity and future product roadmap.
  • Develop CMF strategies suitable for industrial environments.
  • Build prototypes, validate manufacturability, iterate with vendors, and refine designs based on production realities.
  • Visit field deployments, observe product behavior on-site, gather user feedback, and close the loop through iterative improvements.
  • Work closely with engineering, manufacturing, and business teams to ensure alignment with technical feasibility, cost targets, and customer requirements.

Who You Are

  • 3–5 years of hands-on experience in physical / hardware product design.
  • Have taken at least one hardware product from concept to production (bonus if it reached the market).
  • Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering and/or Bachelor's/Master's in Industrial Design or Product Design.
  • Strong mechanical inclination with deep understanding of:
  • Manufacturing processes (sheet metal, fabrication, machining, casting, molding, surface finishing)
  • Medium to high-volume production realities
  • Assembly sequencing and fastener strategy
  • Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks (solid modeling, sheet metal, assemblies, drawings).
  • Working knowledge of GD&T and tolerance stack-up principles.
  • Strong grasp of DFM/DFA and cost implications of design decisions.
  • Comfortable interacting with fabricators, toolmakers, and manufacturing vendors.
  • Strong understanding of ergonomics and human factors in industrial products.
  • Ability to balance aesthetic intent with structural and production constraints.
  • Hands-on prototyping mindset — not purely CAD-driven.
  • A self-starter who can take ownership and drive projects independently in a fast-moving startup environment.

Good to Have

  • Experience in robotics, industrial equipment, automation systems, or heavy-duty hardware.
  • Experience designing enclosures for electronics.
  • Strong sketching and visual communication skills for concept exploration.
  • Rendering and visualization skills (KeyShot, Blender, Adobe Suite, etc.).
  • Exposure to vendor negotiations and tooling discussions.

What Can You Expect

  • Real ownership of hardware systems — from concept through commercial deployment.
  • The opportunity to shape the mechanical and visual DNA of a robotics product line.
  • A high-intensity, innovation-driven environment that rewards initiative and curiosity.
  • Field impact — your designs will operate at real construction sites and directly influence productivity.
  • ESOPs and Personal Accident Insurance.
  • To be part of a core team disrupting one of the largest industries in the world.
