Illustrator

An independent advertising agency of about a hundred people has noticed that its best campaign work lately has come from illustration, not photography or stock imagery: a spot character for a client's social calendar, a hand-drawn key visual that outperformed the shot alternative, a set of icons that made a dry brief feel human. The agency wants that capability in-house rather than briefed out project by project each time.

That is this role. You would sit on the creative floor alongside art directors and designers, but your output is specifically illustration: original artwork built from a creative brief, not layout or brand-system work, which stays with the design team.

What the floor would hand you

Briefs would range from a single spot illustration for a social post to a full illustrated campaign concept: character design, environment or spot art, and the occasional storyboard frame for an animatic. You would work directly with art directors from concept sketch through to final delivery files, and defend a creative choice in a review the same way a designer or writer would.

• Illustrate concepts across formats: social, print, packaging, and campaign key visuals
• Develop original characters, spot art, or icon sets from a creative brief
• Present and defend illustration choices in creative reviews

What we would look for

2 to 6 years illustrating in an agency, studio, or serious freelance capacity, a portfolio with a recognisable style and range across at least two formats, and the ability to take direction without losing what makes the work distinctive. Comfort with Procreate, Photoshop, or Illustrator is assumed.
