Job Description

We are looking for an experienced H&M Claims Specialist for a global shipping client. This role will be responsible for managing a broad range of marine claims and insurance matters across the fleet, including casualty response, incident investigations, claims recovery, and stakeholder management.

The ideal candidate should possess at least 8 years of relevant experience in marine claims, insurance, or risk management gained with shipowners, ship managers, marine insurers, P&I Clubs, or related maritime organisations. Exposure to handling major casualties, Hull & Machinery (H&M) claims, and other complex marine incidents will be highly advantageous.

Responsibilities:

  • Act as the primary point of contact for marine insurance and claims matters across the fleet, providing practical advice and support to internal stakeholders.
  • Manage a wide spectrum of marine claims, including Hull & Machinery (H&M), Protection & Indemnity (P&I), crew, cargo, and other operational incidents.
  • Coordinate the handling of major casualties and complex incidents, including collisions, fires, groundings, salvage operations, and General Average cases, ensuring timely and effective resolution.
  • Conduct investigations into incidents and claims, establish liability and causation, and work closely with insurers, surveyors, lawyers, and external parties to protect the company's interests.
  • Lead claims recovery efforts against responsible third parties and insurers, negotiating settlements and pursuing recoveries on commercially favourable terms.
  • Support the management and administration of the company's marine insurance programme, ensuring adequate coverage and compliance with policy requirements.
  • Monitor claims trends, maintain accurate records, prepare management reports, and provide recommendations to mitigate future risks and losses.
  • Engage and manage external legal counsel and specialists in relation to disputes, arbitrations, mediations, litigation, and other contentious matters where required.
  • Deliver claims and insurance-related guidance and training to internal stakeholders to enhance awareness and strengthen risk management practices.
  • Support crisis response and incident management activities, including stakeholder communication and coordination during significant operational events.
  • Undertake occasional travel as required to support investigations, claims handling, and stakeholder engagement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Maritime Law, Maritime Legal Studies, or Marine Insurance preferred.
  • Minimum 6-8 years of relevant marine insurance and claims management experience with shipowners, ship managers, P&I Clubs, or their correspondents.
  • Strong knowledge of maritime laws and conventions related to cargo liabilities.
  • Proven ability to work independently with strong communication and supervisory skills.
  • In-depth understanding of the container liner industry is advantageous.
  • Proficiency in business applications and IT tools such as SAP, Excel, and Microsoft Office.
