Role Overview
The Head of Department (HOD) Physical Education is responsible for leading, planning, and delivering a high-quality Physical and Health Education (PHE) programme aligned with the International Baccalaureate philosophy. The role involves academic leadership, curriculum planning, teacher mentoring, student development, and promotion of lifelong fitness, well-being, and sportsmanship.
Key Responsibilities
Academic & Curriculum Leadership
- Lead the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the IB Physical and Health Education curriculum (PYP/MYP/DP).
- Ensure curriculum alignment with IB standards, learner profile, and ATL skills.
- Develop age-appropriate units of inquiry integrating health, fitness, movement, and sports education.
- Incorporate inclusive practices and differentiated instruction for diverse learners.
Department Management
- Head and manage the Physical Education department, including lesson planning, scheduling, and resource allocation.
- Mentor, guide, and evaluate PE teachers through observations and feedback.
- Conduct department meetings and support continuous professional development.
- Prepare and manage the departmental budget, equipment, and facilities.
Teaching & Learning
- Deliver engaging, safe, and effective PE lessons as per IB philosophy.
- Promote inquiry-based learning and student-led activities.
- Integrate technology and assessment tools to track student progress.
- Ensure student safety, risk assessments, and proper use of sports facilities.
Student Development & Well-being
- Promote physical fitness, mental well-being, teamwork, leadership, and sportsmanship.
- Identify and support students with special educational needs in collaboration with support teams.
- Encourage participation in inter-school competitions, sports days, and fitness initiatives.
Assessment & Reporting
- Design formative and summative assessments aligned with IB criteria.
- Maintain accurate records of student performance and progress.
- Prepare reports and contribute to parent-teacher meetings and conferences.
Co-curricular & Sports Programmes
- Plan and oversee sports events, tournaments, athletics meets, and school sports calendars.
- Coordinate house systems, clubs, and after-school sports programmes.
- Build partnerships with coaches, sports organizations, and external trainers.
IB Compliance & Professional Responsibilities
- Ensure compliance with IB authorization and evaluation requirements.
- Participate in IB workshops, trainings, and school professional development activities.
- Collaborate with coordinators, counselors, and other HODs.
- Uphold school policies, child safeguarding, and ethical standards.
