Job Description

First Check, the health and information platform of DataLEADS, is seeking a Health Editor to lead our growing editorial efforts on health, medicine, science, public health, and AI. We are looking for a candidate with a strong editorial background, a sound understanding of public health, and a passion for tackling health misinformation. The ideal candidate will lead a multidisciplinary team of journalists and work with a growing network of doctors, researchers, institutions, and partners to produce high-quality, evidence-based journalism and strengthen public trust in health information.  The role combines editorial leadership, partnerships, stakeholder engagement, and public-facing representation. The candidate will be expected to build strategic relationships that expand First Check's editorial reach, expertise, collaborations, and impact.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the editorial strategy and day-to-day operations of First Check's health journalism initiatives.
  • Produce and oversee accurate, evidence-based journalism on health, medicine, science, public health, and AI.
  • Lead and mentor a multidisciplinary team of journalists and work with First Check's network of doctors, researchers, and subject-matter experts.
  • Build partnerships with medical experts, researchers, academic institutions, public health organisations, media, and technology partners.
  • Drive audience engagement and develop collaborations, events, dialogues, research, and other initiatives that expand First Check's reach and impact.
  • Identify emerging health trends, scientific developments, and policy issues for editorial coverage.
  • Represent First Check at national and international conferences, workshops, roundtables, and stakeholder engagements.
  • Contribute to new editorial products, newsletters, multimedia storytelling, training programmes, and collaborative reporting projects.

Experience & Qualifications :

  • Postgraduate degree or professional qualification in Journalism, Mass Communication, Health Sciences, Public Health, Medicine, or a related discipline.
  • 5–10 years of experience in health journalism, science journalism, medical reporting, health communications, or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of public health systems, clinical research, epidemiology, medical statistics, and health policy.
  • Ability to critically evaluate scientific literature, peer-reviewed medical journals, and research evidence.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and storytelling skills, with exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Demonstrated experience leading editorial teams and mentoring journalists.
  • Experience building partnerships and engaging with external stakeholders, experts, institutions, and organisations.
  • Strong project management and organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Excellent communication, networking, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Familiarity with digital publishing, audience analytics, AI-powered newsroom tools, and multimedia storytelling will be an added advantage.
