Role Overview

The Head of Utility Solar & BESS Business Development is responsible for driving sales growth of large-scale ground-mounted solar PV and energy storage projects across India.

This role focuses on developing strategic relationships with Independent Power Producers (IPPs), EPC contractors, developers, and utility customers, securing new project opportunities, and collaborating closely with solution and technical teams to deliver utility-scale projects successfully.

Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
  • Define and execute the India utility-scale Solar & BESS business development strategy.
  • Identify high-growth market segments, tender opportunities, and strategic partnerships.
  • Build and lead a strong pipeline for utility sales and business development across India.
Business Development & Sales
  • Drive the acquisition of large-scale:
  • Ground-mounted PV-only projects
  • Standalone BESS projects
  • Hybrid Solar + BESS projects
  • Develop and manage senior-level relationships with IPPs, EPC contractors, developers, DISCOMs, transmission utilities, and large C&I clients.
  • Lead complex negotiations and oversee commercial structuring of major contracts.
Tender & Project Development
  • Oversee participation in central and state tenders (SECI, NTPC, SJVN, NHPC, state DISCOMs, RTC and FDRE tenders).
  • Guide bid strategy, pricing alignment, and risk evaluation to ensure profitability.
  • Work closely with Solution, Engineering, and Technical teams to align system design with customer requirements and grid compliance standards.
  • Ensure smooth internal handover of secured projects to execution teams.
Market Intelligence & Strategy
  • Monitor regulatory and policy developments, including:
  • ALMM, BIS, and grid compliance requirements
  • State-level storage mandates and hybrid policies
  • Transmission and evacuation challenges
  • Analyze competitor positioning, pricing strategies, and emerging technology trends.
  • Translate market insights into actionable growth strategies.
Cross-Functional Leadership
  • Collaborate with Marketing on brand positioning, market penetration, and participation in industry forums (REI, Intersolar India, etc.).
  • Coordinate with supply chain, finance, and technical teams to optimize project delivery and margins.
  • Report business performance, pipeline forecasts, and strategic insights to senior management.
Requirements
  • 10+ years of experience in renewable energy, with significant exposure to utility-scale solar and/or BESS projects in India.
  • Proven track record in closing large MW-scale projects with IPPs, EPCs, or utilities.
  • Strong understanding of:
  • SECI, NTPC, and state-level tender frameworks
  • Utility project structuring and financing
  • Inverters, MV systems, SCADA, and BESS technologies
  • Indian grid compliance and regulatory landscape
  • Strong commercial and financial acumen (IRR, LCOE, PPA models, VGF, project financing structures).
  • Established network within India's utility solar and storage ecosystem.
  • Excellent negotiation, leadership, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field (MBA or Master's degree preferred).
  • Willingness to travel nationally as required.
