Position: Business Head
Industry: City Bus Depot Management Joint Venture
Job-Overview
Purpose of the Role
- The Business Head will provide strategic, operational, and leadership direction to the Joint Venture established for City Bus Depot Management.
- The Business Head will be responsible for end-to-end performance of depot operations, financial sustainability, regulatory compliance, service quality, stakeholder management, and long-term growth in alignment with urban transport authority objectives and JV partner expectations.
Strategic Leadership & Governance
- Define and execute the overall vision, mission, and long-term strategy of the JV.
- Translate JV agreements into executable business and operational plans.
- Present strategic plans, budgets, and performance reports to the Board.
- Ensure strong corporate governance, transparency, and ethical conduct.
- Balance public service obligations with commercial viability.
Operations & Depot Management
- Oversee efficient management of city bus depots, including fleet parking, dispatch, cleaning, fuelling/charging, and maintenance.
- Ensure optimal fleet availability, turnaround time, and depot utilisation.
- Implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) for depot operations.
- Drive operational excellence through technology, automation, and process improvements.
- Coordinate with city transport undertakings and bus operators for seamless service delivery.
Financial Management & Commercial Oversight
- Own the P&L of the Joint Venture.
- Prepare and control annual budgets, capex plans, and cash flow forecasts.
- Ensure cost optimisation while maintaining service quality and safety.
- Oversee billing, revenue realisation, contract compliance, and audits.
- Evaluate new revenue streams such as commercial utilisation of depot assets.
Regulatory, Safety & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with the Motor Vehicles Act, labour laws, safety regulations, and environmental norms.
- Drive a strong safety culture across depots, fleet, and workforce.
- Oversee accident prevention, incident investigations, and corrective actions.
- Ensure statutory compliance related to contract labour, PF, ESI, and local authorities.
- Act as the primary interface with transport authorities and regulators.
People Leadership & Industrial Relations
- Build and lead a high-performing leadership team.
- Oversee workforce planning, hiring, performance management, and succession planning.
- Maintain harmonious industrial relations, including union engagement where applicable.
- Promote a culture of accountability, discipline, and continuous improvement.
- Ensure robust training and capability development programs.
Stakeholder Management
- Manage relationships with JV partners, city transport authorities, OEMs, and vendors.
- Act as the principal spokesperson for the organisation.
- Handle escalations, disputes, and critical stakeholder issues.
- Represent the JV in government, public, and industry forums.
Risk Management & Business Continuity
- Identify operational, financial, legal, and reputational risks.
- Implement risk mitigation and internal control frameworks.
- Ensure disaster recovery and business continuity planning for depot operations.
- Lead crisis management during operational disruptions or emergencies.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Fleet availability and uptime.
- Cost per bus per day.
- Safety metrics and accident rates.
- Compliance score
- Employee productivity and attrition
- EBITDA and cash flow targets

Education & Experience
- Graduate degree in Engineering, Management, Transport, or related field (Post-graduation preferred).
- 12+ years of experience in transport, infrastructure, logistics, utilities, or large operations-led organisations.
- Minimum 57 years in a senior leadership or Business Head role.
- Proven experience managing large workforces and unionised environments.
- Experience working with government bodies or PPP/JV structures is highly desirable.

Reports to: COO / Joint Venture Partners Experience:
Education: Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business Administration, or related field
Master's degree (MBA/PGDM) preferred.
