Job Description

Job Title: Head Accountant

Department: Finance & Accounts Reporting To: Senior Management Location: Kampala, Uganda Employment Type: Full-Time Salary: USD 2,500 per month

Position Overview

We are looking for a competent, hands-on, and result-driven Head Accountant to lead our Finance & Accounts function in Kampala, Uganda. This is a great opportunity for a proactive finance professional who enjoys taking full ownership of accounting, taxation, payroll, compliance, and financial operations across multiple projects and entities.

You will play a key role in ensuring financial accuracy, statutory compliance, strong internal controls, and timely reporting while supporting senior management with strategic insights. If you have solid experience in a fast-paced, multi-entity environment and are ready to relocate to Uganda, this could be an excellent career move.

Key Responsibilities

Accounting & Financial Management

  • Lead and supervise day-to-day accounting operations, including books of accounts, bank reconciliations, journal entries, and financial records.
  • Review and approve financial transactions, payments, receipts, and supplier/contractor reconciliations.
  • Manage petty cash, labour payments, and ensure strong cash controls.
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, and financial analysis.
  • Prepare accurate management reports, reconciliations, and financial summaries for decision-making.

Taxation & Statutory Compliance

  • Ensure timely and accurate compliance with all tax and statutory requirements in Uganda.
  • Handle tax computations, filings, assessments, objections, and notices.
  • Coordinate with tax authorities and manage tax audits/inspections effectively.
  • Stay updated on regulatory changes and advise management on compliance matters.

Audit & Regulatory Coordination

  • Lead coordination of statutory audits and work closely with external auditors.
  • Prepare audit schedules, workings, and supporting documentation.
  • Ensure timely resolution of audit observations and implementation of recommendations.

Payroll & Team Management

  • Oversee full payroll processing, including expatriate payroll and statutory deductions.
  • Manage staff advances, loans, and employee-related financial matters.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the finance and accounts team.
  • Participate in recruitment and training of finance staff as needed.

Internal Controls & Process Improvement

  • Strengthen internal controls, financial processes, and risk management practices.
  • Identify process gaps and implement improvements for efficiency and compliance.
  • Monitor liquidity, fund management, and financial discipline across operations.

Reporting & Strategic Support

  • Deliver timely and accurate financial reports to senior management.
  • Support strategic planning, decision-making, and cross-functional coordination.

Qualifications & Experience

Education

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, or Business Administration.
  • Professional qualifications such as ACCA, CPA, CA, or equivalent are highly preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum 2–4 years of relevant experience in accounting, taxation, payroll, and compliance (candidates with 4+ years will be preferred).
  • Experience in construction, infrastructure, real estate, manufacturing, or multi-company/project environments is a strong advantage.
  • Hands-on exposure to financial reporting, contractor/supplier reconciliations, audit coordination, and internal controls.

Skills & Tools

  • Proficiency in Tally Prime (essential) and strong command of Microsoft Excel.
  • Good understanding of accounting software/ERP systems.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills.
