Job Title: Harness Design Engineer
Job Description
The Harness Design Engineer designs, optimizes, and documents vehicle wiring harnesses and related components, ensuring robust integration of electrical and electronic systems. This role combines hands-on CAD work in CATIA with packaging and benchmarking studies, close collaboration with electrical and electronics systems engineering teams, and direct interaction with program stakeholders and suppliers. The engineer contributes to high-quality, production-ready designs and supports continuous improvement of vehicle electrical architecture.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop vehicle wiring harnesses, including routing, wiring optimization studies, and detailed drawing creation for production release.
- Perform benchmarking studies on electrical and electronic modules and systems to inform design decisions and improve harness architecture.
- Conduct packaging studies for electrical and electronic modules and systems, defining their locations within the vehicle while considering space, accessibility, and serviceability.
- Independently design attachment schemes and brackets, including plastic and sheet metal brackets, to secure harnesses and associated components.
- Collaborate closely with the Electrical & Electronics Systems Engineering (EESE) team to understand requirements, support design requests, and develop engineered solutions.
- Apply knowledge of vehicle architecture, aggregate groups, sub-groups, systems, and subsystems to ensure proper integration of harness designs.
- Work with program stakeholders and suppliers, communicating design intent, addressing technical queries, and aligning on specifications and deliverables.
- Use Teamcenter Engineering and Vismockup to manage CAD data, review digital mockups, and validate harness routing and packaging in the virtual vehicle environment.
- Ensure designs meet quality, safety, and manufacturability requirements, and support design reviews and issue resolution.
- Work both independently and collaboratively to meet project deadlines, proactively identify issues, and drive solutions.
- Maintain a high level of commitment and motivation, acting as a self-starter who takes ownership of assigned tasks and deliverables.
Essential Skills
- Extensive working experience in CATIA V5 and 3DEXPERIENCE (3DX) for Electrical Harness Design, Part Modelling, and Surface Design.
- Strong hands-on experience in wiring harness design, including wiring optimization studies and drawing creation.
- Experience performing benchmarking and packaging studies for electrical and electronic modules and systems in vehicles.
- Ability to independently design attachment schemes and brackets, including plastic and sheet metal bracket design.
- Good knowledge of vehicle architecture, vehicle aggregate groups, sub-groups, systems, and subsystems.
- Proficiency with Teamcenter Engineering and Vismockup for data management and digital mockup reviews.
- Strong communication skills to effectively interact with program stakeholders and suppliers.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within cross-functional teams.
- High level of commitment, motivation, and self-starting attitude in a technical engineering environment.
- Bachelor's degree (BE) in Mechanical, Automotive, or Electrical Engineering, or an equivalent engineering discipline.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in automotive electrical systems or vehicle development environments.
- Exposure to end-to-end harness development, from concept to production release, is advantageous.
- Ability to interpret and apply engineering standards and best practices related to wiring harness design.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to analyze packaging constraints and propose practical solutions.
- Attention to detail in CAD modeling, drawing creation, and data management.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a project-driven environment.
Work Environment
The role operates in a professional engineering environment that combines office-based design work with virtual vehicle reviews. The Harness Design Engineer primarily works with advanced CAD and PLM tools, including CATIA V5, 3DEXPERIENCE (3DX), Teamcenter Engineering, and Vismockup, to create and validate wiring harness designs in a digital mockup environment. Work typically follows standard business hours, with flexibility as needed to meet project milestones and collaborate with cross-functional teams and suppliers. The environment encourages close collaboration with electrical and electronics systems engineers, as well as other design and development functions, in a structured, project-oriented setting. Standard professional attire is expected in line with a modern engineering office.
