Job Description

Location: Hyderabad/Bangalore

JOB PURPOSE:

The Group Senior Manager-

DBA will own the strategy, performance, and security of the enterprise database platform across the Ports and Terminals environment, spanning Oracle and PostgreSQL DB Technologies. They will ensure mission-critical databases remain scalable, reliable, and secure while aligning with global business objectives. They build/manage a team of DBAs and DB engineers who partner with development teams and end users to achieve this.

The role balances day-to-day operational excellence (incident management, performance optimization, backup and recovery, capacity planning) with long-term platform evolution (automation, cloud modernization, standardization, lifecycle optimization). It establishes strong engineering discipline, reduces operational risk, and enables platforms to scale with business growth.

Another core aspect is people management: hiring, mentoring, and developing a high-performing team of database engineers and administrators with deep technical expertise, operational rigor, and strong problem-solving capabilities. The role fosters a culture of accountability, continuous learning, and collaboration.

Success here directly impacts data availability, application performance, engineering productivity, customer experience, security posture, and the organization's ability to scale reliably.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Database Architecture & Strategy

  • Design scalable, secure database architectures aligned with business goals across Oracle, PostgreSQL, etc. and cloud-native databases.
  • Lead capacity planning and forecasting to support long-term growth.

Database Operations & Optimization

  • Own end-to-end operations, performance tuning, query optimization, and data governance across:
  • Oracle (RAC, Data Guard, RMAN, HA/DR)
  • PostgreSQL (streaming/logical replication, partitioning, tuning)
  • SQL Server (HA/DR, clustering, replication)
  • Manage patching and upgrades, backup/restore, HA, and DR strategies.
  • Ensure efficient management of both on-premise and cloud databases.

Operational Excellence, Risk & Governance

  • Establish SLAs, performance metrics, and quality standards for reliable database services.
  • Lead incident management, escalation, and root cause analysis to minimize disruption.
  • Drive continuous improvement in efficiency, resilience, security, and customer experience.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, IT security standards, and DP World governance through strong documentation, data governance, and business continuity practices.

Innovation, Automation & DevOps

  • Drive automation using Ansible, Jenkins, Python, Bash, and PowerShell.
  • Introduce modern practices: Infrastructure as Code, automated failover, and observability.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies (distributed SQL, cloud-native DB services) for enterprise adoption.

Team Leadership & Collaboration

  • Lead and mentor the multi-technology DBA team; drive architecture and design discussions.
  • Partner with engineering, IT, product, and integration teams to support enterprise-scale applications.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Science or Engineering, or above.

Experience:

  • 8+ years in database administration across Oracle, PostgreSQL, and NoSQL systems, with 3+ years in leadership roles (preferred but not mandatory).

Technical Skills:

  • Expertise in Oracle (RAC, Data Guard, RMAN), PostgreSQL. Expertise in NoSQL platforms (MongoDB, Cassandra, DynamoDB/DocumentDB) is a plus.
  • Strong on-premise and cloud experience across AWS, Azure, and OCI.
  • Proficient in performance tuning, troubleshooting, database security, encryption, and compliance frameworks.
  • Familiarity with logistics IT/OT integration, microservices, ITIL, and Agile.

Leadership & Communication:

  • Ability to translate business requirements into scalable platform designs.
  • Experienced in coaching and developing technical talent at different career stages.
  • Strong project management skills with ability to prioritize and manage multiple initiatives.
  • Culturally competent in fostering inclusive, collaborative team environments.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills with ability to explain technical concepts to varied audiences.
