Cloud Engineering within Group Digital provides build and run capabilities for enterprise cloud platforms. This includes platform automation, DevOps tooling, CI/CD enablement, security baseline implementation, and operational support across Azure, AWS, and Google Cloud.

The function also provides shared development tooling capabilities that support engineering teams across the Firm. These tools enable secure software development, automated deployment, and operational consistency across multiple technology platforms.

The services are already in active use across internal delivery teams. The focus is on stability, standardisation, and controlled improvement of the development platform ecosystem.

Service Line Information

Cloud Engineering services the broader Firm through delivery of core technology and managed services capabilities, collaboration and innovation development services, and development of strategic technology partnerships.

The Development Tools team supports the engineering community by providing and operating enterprise development platforms, CI/CD tooling, and supporting automation services that underpin software delivery across the Firm.

Job Description

The Team

The role sits within the Cloud Engineering / Development Tools team in Group Digital. The team is responsible for engineering, maintaining, and operating the development tooling ecosystem used by multiple engineering teams.

The team supports enterprise tooling platforms including Azure DevOps, GitHub, Docker registries, Atlassian tooling, mobile developer consoles, and infrastructure automation tooling.

These services underpin large numbers of active engineering teams and production workloads. The focus of the team is on operational stability, platform standardisation, and continuous improvement of the developer experience through automation and reliable tooling.

The team operates within a multi-supplier delivery model and works closely with cloud platform teams, security teams, and application delivery teams.

The Role

The Development Tools Engineer is a senior hands-on engineering role responsible for building, operating, and improving enterprise development tooling platforms used across the organisation.

The role provides technical leadership within the development tools platform team while remaining actively involved in engineering implementation and operational support.

The engineer ensures that development platforms remain reliable, secure, and scalable while enabling engineering teams to build and deploy software efficiently.

The role translates approved platform standards and security requirements into working tooling configurations, automation workflows, and operational processes.

This role requires strong engineering ownership and technical judgement. It is not a strategy or architecture role but does involve technical leadership and guidance within the engineering team.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Engineer, operate, and maintain enterprise development tooling platforms including Azure DevOps, GitHub, Docker registries, Atlassian tools , and supporting automation services
  • Implement and maintain CI/CD platform capabilities used by development teams across the organisation
  • Manage and support infrastructure automation tooling including Atlantis and HashiCorp Vault integration where required
  • Provide technical leadership within the development tools engineering team, supporting less experienced engineers and contributing to platform engineering standards
  • Implement platform security controls and access governance across development tooling platforms
  • Support mobile development tooling integrations including Apple and Google developer console environments
  • Develop and maintain automation scripts, configuration templates, and reusable tooling patterns to support development teams
  • Maintain platform reliability through monitoring, troubleshooting, and resolution of tooling incidents affecting engineering teams
  • Support incident triage, problem management, and root cause analysis for development platform issues
  • Execute platform changes through controlled change and release processes
  • Work with security, architecture, and engineering teams to implement approved platform configurations and controls
  • Maintain documentation, platform runbooks, and operational support procedures
  • Support audit and governance activities by maintaining traceability of configuration and access controls across development tooling platforms
  • Collaborate effectively with platform teams, delivery teams, and third-party suppliers within a multi-supplier operating environment

Qualifications


The Person

To be effective in this role, the individual must have:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related technical discipline
  • 5-7 years of professional experience in DevOps engineering, platform engineering, or development tooling engineering roles
  • Experience operating and supporting enterprise developer platforms or shared engineering tooling services used by multiple development teams
  • Experience working within multi-team or multi-supplier delivery environments supporting enterprise engineering platforms
  • Experience implementing or maintaining developer enablement capabilities such as repository governance, build automation, and developer platform standardisation
  • Experience supporting tooling platforms used by production engineering teams, including operational troubleshooting, service reliability, and platform lifecycle management
  • Strong hands-on experience operating enterprise development tooling platforms such as Azure DevOps, GitHub, or similar DevOps toolchains
  • Experience managing CI/CD platforms and supporting software delivery pipelines in enterprise environments
  • Practical knowledge of container tooling including Docker
  • Experience working with infrastructure automation tooling such as Terraform, Atlantis, or similar platforms
  • Working knowledge of secrets management and secure configuration management using tools such as HashiCorp Vault
  • Experience supporting enterprise engineering environments including access control, repository management, and platform governance
  • Ability to provide technical leadership and guidance to other engineers within the team
  • Experience supporting live production platforms including incident response and operational troubleshooting
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with development teams, platform engineers, and security stakeholders
  • Familiarity with enterprise governance processes including security reviews, change control, and audit requirements

  • HashiCorp Certified: Terraform Associate
